GOVERNMENT HELP JUSTIFIED [Pkk United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 13. Addressing the Fruitgrowers’ Conference, which he opened to-day, the Hon. 0. J. Hawken said that Government help had been justified, but he hoped as time went on that the industry would be able to do without help. He felt that small fruits had not reached that mark where chev could supply the local demand. With regard to fruit diseases, the Depa, tment of Agriculture was doing its I**** to help the growers. He expressed the opinion that there was an opening for canning pears in New Zealand. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of the four retiring directum—- Messrs Brash, Robertson, Torode, and Tate—was confirmed. Remits wore adopted affiliating the small fruitgrowers and tomato growers’ associations.
