PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY

The above society’s second concert will bo lick! in His Majesty’s ’theatre to-morrow. A most interesting programme has been arranged lor this concert, opening with the grand march 1 Fame and Glory.’ This will he Pillowed by the popular overture,_ ‘ Merry Wives of Windsor,’ by Nicholai, which is a great favourite with all jovors of music. Two lighter pieces will follow —Romance, ‘Spring's Awakening’ (by Bach) and the popular Noeturno ‘ Liebostraiim ’ (by Liszt). This is more generally known as a piano solo, but is a. very tine orchestral selection as well, and no doubt will ho very much appreciated by the. society’s members. The first part of the programme will conclude with the first movement of the ‘ oth Symphony in B Flat Major’ by Ghizoiincw. This is one of this composer’s finest works, and is a beautiful piece of orchestration. The second part of the programme will open with the overture ‘ Stradella,’ which is full of bright and lively passages, and is banner to appeal to the audience. This will ho followed by Mascagni’s symphonic poem, j Hymn to tho Sun,’ which is one. of this composer’s finest works. Next will follow a flute solo, ‘ Humoreske,’ Air H. W. Noes being the soloist, and this should prove an added attraction to tTie programme. Tho orchestra will again ho heard in a selection of melodies from Puccini’s opera, ‘La Bohenie,’ and selections from this fine opera are nlJvays popular. This will ho followed by a romance for strings, woodwind, and horns, ' Saint D’Aniour,’ by Elgar. The. programme will conclude with ‘Three Dances,’ by Sir Edward German. The vocalists for this concert will be Aliss Irene Horniblow, who will be. heard in 1 Arise. 0 Sun,' by Day, and the 1 Prelude ’ by Landon Ronald, and Air Mortley' Peake, whose numbers arc ‘The Wanderer’ and ‘Onaway, Awake Beloved.’ A limited number of 2s (id tickets arc on sale as ‘advertised.
