TIMING OF SPEED
INSPECTOR'S ACTION CRITICISED [Feb United Peebs Assocutiox.] CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 11. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., took strong exception to the actions of the Riccarton Borough Council’s traffic inspector in connection with the charges laid against motorists for speeding. During the cross-examination of the inspector, counsel for the defence elicited the fact that the timing of the inspector and his assistants was not reliable, and alleged that the inspector had offered to reduce the speed alleged from twentyeight miles to twenty-six miles an hour if he would plead guilty. The inspector denied that anything was mentioned about a plea of guilty, but admitted a conversation about reducing the speed. In dismissing the case, Mr Mosley said that a very grave thing had been admitted by the senior inspector, who confessed making a statement to a motorist regarding a reduction of his speed mileage. That would affect the attitude of the court unles some radical alteration were made. “If I have reason to belive that representations have been made to defendants or anything of that sort, it will result in the dismissal of the cases,” added His Worship.
