DANGEROUS CRIMINAL
THE ESSEX MURDER BROWNE UNDER CONSTANT WATCH. Press Association—By Teiog rapb—Copyright. LONDON, May 3. The . most puzzling feature of Browne’s attempt to commit suicide is how he obtained the j zor blade, and the officials aro holding an inquiry. Realising that he is the most dangerous and violent criminal in England, and egotistical to an astounding degree, they do not permit the slightest relaxation of tho strict regulations. Two warders watch him day and night. Both in tho morning and the evening his clothes aro searched, while his ,ell is searched twice daily. Every article he uses is ch-ndy scruitinised, and m governor is empowered to order him! a padded cell and shackle his hands and logs. It is believed that Browne actually made up his mind to shoot himself during the trial at Old Bailey. Ho coolly asked counsel, while in the witness box, to hand him a revolver and cartridges in order to better illustrate his -vidonce, but Mr Justice Avery immediately saw the ruse and snapped out: “ You can give evidence without handling a revolver..” Browne, _ defeated momentarily, smiled cynically.—Australian Press association.
