DELETION OF CYCLING
POINTS FOR LIST SHIELD DISCUSSION AT CENTRE MEETING For some seasons past cycling events have counted I’or points'for the List Shield, which is competed for annually by clubs at the Otago amateur athletic championships, and is awarded for most points. At a meeting of the Otago Centre last night, however, which was held for the purpose of revising the centre’s rules, discussion centred around a proposal that cycling should be deleted from competition for the List Shield, it being pointed out that since the advent of the new cycling club other clubs did not now have to cater for cycling as in the past. Mr E. L. Macasscy was in the chair. Mr H. T. Emmerson said that Mr N. J. Stickling had moved a notice of motion in regard to the matter, which had been held over to the annual meeting, but lie thought that now the rules wore being revised it might be considered, the chairman being of the same opinion. Mr Suckling said that bo thought cycling events at the Otago charapionsiiips should not count for the List Shield, which should be awarded for most points in track and field events only. Mr Gibson said that there wore some delegates absent who would have been against the proposal, which lie thought should bo held over. Mr Suckling moved that cycling points be deleted 'from the competition for, the List Shield, Mr Kerr seconding the motion. Mr Emmerson said that when the List Shield was awarded there was no cycling, and it was now the donor’s wish that it should be confined to amateur athletics _ only. Mr Suckling said that with the deletion of cycling competition would bo keener for the List Shield than was the case at present^ Mr Emmerson said that under present conditions some of tho chibs got busy just before tho championships roping in cyclists to get points for the List Shield. Mr Melville: “That is uncalled for.” Mr Rolfe moved, as an amendment, that the original notice of motion of Mr Suckling on the matter should bo dealt with at the next meeting of the centre, and the decision then arrived at in regard to tho List Shield could bo incorporated in the rule*!, the amendment being carried. TRANSFERS. The rule brought down in regard to transfers was that transfers from one club to another should be granted only by tho centre, and should take effect as from April 1 or October, and that applications for a transfer must bo iu the hands ot the secretary of the centre a month prior to these dates, and must name the clubs concerned, but provided always that applications from members of country chibs or vice versa to city or suburban clubs or vice versa shall bo considered by the centre. For the purpose of this rule country clubs would moan clubs having their headquarters beyond Port Chalmers and Mosgicl. Mr R. N. Watson said that as many of tho clubs did not bold their annual meetings until well on in March and as tho matter of transfers often did not come up until then ho thought applications should be neccped later Ilian March 1. Mr A. Melville suggested that applications should be in before tho third Tuesday in March or September, the rule eventually being passed with this amendment. STANDARDS. The following were fixed as Otago championship standards 100yds, 10 l-ssoc; 220yds, _ “•'Lee; 440yds, 52 2-sscc; 880yds, 2min 2scc; one mile, 4min 32sec; two miles, 9min GOscc; three miles, Ifnnin 3Usec; four miles, 2lmin; 120yds hurdles, 16 l-ssec; 440yds hurdles, 60sec; one mile walk, (Jmin 60sec; two-mile walk, l-linin 2Usee; three-mile walk, 23min; _ high jump, 6ft Oin; running broad jump, 21ft; pole vault, Oft Din; putting 16ib weight (7ft circle), 37ft; hop, step, and jump, 44ft; throwing discus, 115 ft; throwing javelin, 140 ft. The matter of the cycling standards was held over, lb was resolved that competitors equalling or bettering standards should he awarded suitable certificates. TORT ROAD RACE. When tho rules in regard to the Tort Chalmers to Dunedin road race were being considered Mr Melville drew attention to the diiculty that was experienced at the finish of keeping the crowd back, and he suggested that the race should finish at Logan Park. It was resolved that an endeavour ho made to have the race finish at Logan Park, and also that prizes be increased to (be following :■ —First, trophy, £2; second, £1 10s; tliircl, £1; fastest time, £2; first unplaced novice, 15s. It was resolved that tho Nickel’s Challenge Cup bo awarded to the club having the best aggregate for placings gained by its members in the Port road raco and in the modified Marathon road raco contested in the same year. 'The number of entries (Tom clubs are to be unlimited, but three competitors from any one chib will count for the aggregate. CUP WINNERS. 'Hie winners of the various cups in competition last track season were announced as follow; — Barton Cup (relay racing).—Civil Service 1, Anglican 2, Caversham 3. Milne Cup (distance handicaps).—W. Murphy (Caversham) 1. J. J. Morris (Caversham) 2, L. Wood and B. 11. M'Kcrnan (Civil Service) equal 3. Greonslade Cup (field handicaps).— J. W. Johnson (Anglican) 1, B. Provo (Anglican) 2, ancl P. G. Ward (Anglican) 3. Moody Cup (sprint handicaps).—E. A Bastings (Civil Service) 1, L. C. M'Lachlan (Civil Service) 2, A. G. Holt (Pacific) 3. The Dewar and Scott Cups for cycling have yet to be allocated.
