SERMONS FOR LAY READERS
VOLUME TO BE COMPILED (Tan liNirnu Truss Association.] WELLINGTON, May 1, Thu difficulties encountered by lay readers in securing appropriate volumes of sermons for their use were referred to by speakers at to-day’s session of the General Synod. “I don’t think wc arc grateful enough for the work our lay readers do,” said Canon F. G, Harvie, of H Iton, in moving that Archdeacon Meredith and Canon E. H. Strong be appointed a committee to compile a volume of sermons lor the use of lay readers, and that _ the General Synod guarantee any deficit in the expenses involved up to £SO. “ \ y often,” added Canon Harvie. “ the day readers are completely at a, loss to know what they should do in the way of sermons. They often have to rely on antiquated sermons picked up from anywhere. It is felt that a volume should be produced in New Zealand, for lay readers frequently have to use a volume prepared for use in other parts of the world, where conditions are totally different.” _ Archdeacon Meredith mentioned that a volume of sermons had been prepared after the last General Synod. “ These sermons,” he said, amid laughter, “took only six minutes to read. The lay readers did not like them. I don’t 'know what the congregation thought.” (Laughter). The resolution moved by Canon Harvie was carried. VICARS’ STIPENDS. The following resolution was carried “ That it be a recommendation to the diocesan synods that the minimum stipend for vicars, whether of parishes or parochial districts, shall be £350 per annum, in addition to a bouse and reasonable travelling expenses.”
