OTAGO HUNT CLUB
OPENING MEET. The Otago Hunt Chib held its opening meet- of the now season on Saturday afternoon in cold hut Cine weather. There was a splendid turn nut of followers. but the number of spectators was small, owing, no doubt, to tbo heavy bail shower which 101 l just, as (K> run was about to start. 1 hose wlio did attend, however, spent au interesting and enjoyable afternoon. The run was held over the properties of .Messrs M. Stevenson and George Donaldson at, “Sea View,” Green Bland, and was thoroughly enjoyed by tiie largo number of followers. As it was the first run of the season, and there, wore several now horses that bad never been over the country before, the run was made a short one. and comprised about eight good post-and-rail jumps. The opening run was hold earlier than usual this season, so as to allow owners who wished to qualify their horses for the Hunters’ Steeple chase at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Meeting to attend, hut it was disappointing not to find a Wingatui horse following.” The rim, which was in charge of the master (Mr L. Mowat) ami deputy-master (Mr J. N. Murdoch), started off shortly after 3 p.m. on Mr Stevenson’s property opposite lira St. Clair golf house. Coming on through his paddocks, the road was crossed, and a post-and-rail was jumped which brought the followers into Mr Donaldson’s property. This jump proved a stumbling block to many of fhe followers, several baulking before eventually gel ting over. The remainder of tin' run was through Mr Donaldson’s property over post-a mi-rail jumps, which were negotiated by all the followers with Iho exception of Mr S. ALK ay, owner and rider of a new horse from Central Otago named Lloyd Lindsay, which hit the rail heavily and came down, neither horse nor rider being hurt. Judging by the number of new followers al the limit, the elnh should have a very successful season. It nas also pleasing to see more women followers presold I linn was formerly Ibe case.
