POPULAR PREACHER

£.‘LOUi) A YF.AH OFFER REFUSED

A £O,OOO a year post in Montreal lias been declined by Dr F. W. Norwood, the minister of the City Temple. The offer' was received by Dr Norwood from the American Presbyterian Church in Montreal. Jt took him only sis hours to decide that he could not leave the City 'Temple in Holburn Viaduct, where ho has preached since r.du.

“Had 1 been a tree man," said Dr Norwood to a ‘Daily Express’ representative, “ 1 should have accepted tiro invitation, but 1 love the City Temple and do not wish to leave it. I gave tne mutter moat serious consideration, but within six hours 1 had cabled back declining the oiler. Later I received a letter pointing out tne groat opportunity lor me in Canada now that the various denominations have united. Tnere is talk in these days ot the paucity ot good perachers—and it may have some bearing on this invitation—but I think it is more apparent than real. 1 bclicyo there are many able preachers in this country, but the Jim&light lalis only on a lew. The great churches do nut consider how the great preacher in the little obscure church is to become known, and often do not seek to give the unknown a chance. The churches should look out for promising preachers among their younger men and smaller churches. Great men of special attainments cannot be expected to select the ministry as their vocation unless the ministry itself holds a, high place in the reverence of the people. When the people demand good preaching they will obtain it.”

The death is announced from Johannesburg of Sergeant Clem Roberts, U.C.M., who rescued Mr Winston Churchill from a precarious position near Dewetsdorp in the Boer War during heavy Boer fire in 1900. Miraculous cures are said to be obtained in Hawaii by visits to the famous " healing stones " of Wahiawa, near Honolulu. People with seemingly incurable diseases go to them, and it is stated come away ap. patently well.
