The magistrate, in committing Seberac to prison pending trial, said that the necklace was not worth fifteen sous to the thief, because the pearls were known to all dealers. The police alleged that Seberac led a double life. Seberac, in a statement, said that the parcel was slightly battered and showed the pearls, which he pocketed.
