MEETING OF ASSOCIATION CIVIC AFFAIRS CONSIDERED A meeting of the Dunedin City Ratepayers’ Association was held in the 11.5. A. Club rooms last evening, Dr New!ands presiding over an attendance of seven members. THE WARD SYSTEM. In reply to a letter from the association in connection with the ward electoral system, the (own clerk of the Auckland City Council stated that a remit on this matter was dealt with by the Municipal 'Conference, and suggested that any inquiry should be made through the Dunedin town clerk. The" Secretary (Mr E. Mi. Wing) said that he had interviewed the town clerk (Mr G. A. Lewin) recently, and the latter, after going through the papers of the conference, had.stated that there had been no such remit. The Auckland town dork was quite wrong, and it appeared as if they did not wish to give the Ratepayers’ Association any information. “Not a very courteous Idler, but it had bettor he received,’’ said Dr Newlands. PACIFIC STREET CHANNELLING. A complaint from Mr A. S. Thom-“ son, a resident of Pacific street., Rosly 11, about the channelling and the handrail in the street, which had been held over from last meeting, was brought up for further consideration. The Secretary said that ho had brought this matter under the notice of the town clerk, who had referred it to the city engineer. Mr P. Ritchio said that this street was ono of the best in Roslyn. There worn a dozen places forty times worse than this street in Roslyn and Kaikorai. The handrail was as firm as n floor. IST r Ritchie was surprised at the letter being received, and thought that they should take no notice of it. If such silly things were sent to the council it would take no notice of them. GENERAL,
Mr Wing reported on various matters which had been brought under the notice of tho town clerk since the last meeting, ft had boon stated that the Maitland street roadway was very steel), and the authorities did not see how (hey could prevent the surface being rough. Tho town dork had agreed that the crossings at Stafford and Carroll streets could lie improved; and had said that ho would bring this matter before the city engineer, who was now responsible for all the street surfaces, including the tramways.
’Mr Sincock reported that he had attended a meeting of the St. Hilda, Reach Improvement Society, _ and had assured them of the association’s support and co-operation. The question was whether they could help St. Hilda in the direction of requesting the City Council to co-operate in some way. The president, vice-president, and Mr Ritchie were constituted a sub-com-mitteo to meet before tho_ ordinary monthly meeting of tho association and prepare the agenda papers. It was stated by several members that many trivial matters were being brought up before the meetings which could very well have been dealt with in committee. The resignation of Mr J. W. Fjuilkner from the executive was accepted, Mr T. Scott being appointed to fill, tho vacancy.
