FRENCH CLUB
Tho opening meeting of the Dunedin French Club for the year was held Inst evening. There was a large attendance of members. The president (Dr G. E. Thompson), in referring to the prosperous position of the club, pointed out that the purposes for which a. French Club existed were maniio.d—_ the fostering of a love for France and for French literature, the study of great French literary works, and of trench art and music. But the most important aim was that of affording the necessary opportunities for French conversation, in which facility could only be acquired by practice, Ho called upon members \,o do their utmost vo contribute to the success of the club by developing the conversational side of the meetings Ho expressed the thanks of the club to M. Saldaigne (vicepresident) for his successful production of two French comedies last year; also to Mrs Primmer for her capable services as secretary for several years, and to Mine Saldaigne and Mine Bellnguo, who had supervised the supper arrangements. M, Saldaigne also spoke on the importance of developing facility in French conversation. The following office-bearers were elected for the'ensuing year:—President, Dr G. E. Thompson; vice-presi-dents—M. Saldaigne and Miss It Allan ; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. J. Arnold; librarian, Mr W. F. Dick; committee—Mine Bellugue, Mme Saldagne, Mile Puechegud, Miss Bentham, Mr Dakin, Mrs’ Primmer (co-opted). The President also announced that an excellent programme had been arranged for the year, consisting of lectures, causerics,' dramatic reading, a_ debate, a card evening, a musical evening, etc.
