General Pangalos was the leader of a revolution in Greece in June, 1923, which led to the deposition from the Premiership of M. Michalaponlos. The general was speedily installed Prime Minister and Minister of Mar, and formed a new Cabinet early in July. Shortly after he assumed office ho announced that he purposed forming a strong army within twelve months. In 1921 General Pangalos was suspected of aiming at a military dictatorship, and consequently had numerous opponents, who were not long in finding an opportunity to compass his downhill. On July Id parties of .soldiers entered two newspaper offices in Salonika and killed four journalists in revenge lor the publication of insults against their colonel. General Pangalos was charged with having connived at the outrage, and his denials of the charge failed to satisfy the Opposition. After an uproarious all-night sitting on July 18 the Papanastasion Ministry, of which General Pangalos was a prominent associate, was overthrown. Subsequently General Pangalos regained power and made himself dictator, but in 1026 he was deposed, and has since been a prisoner of the State.
