Approximately 2,000 people witnessed the screening of the Baramoimt picture ‘ Wings' at the Capitol Theatre, Canberra, on Thursday, March 15. The occasion was in honor of Bert Hinkler, who was the guest of honor at the entertainment. Bert Hinkler and his mother were accompanied by the Prime Minister (Mr Stanley Bruce), Mrs Bruce, and party. Mr R. Rowe, president of R.S.S.L., and the Right Hon. William Morris Hughes made short addresses from the stage, the latter officially welcoming Bert Hinkler as the guest of the evening. Bert Hinkler’s landing in Sydney was shown on the ‘Paramount Gazette/ and then was followed by the air picture ‘Mings.’ At the conclusion of the screening the Prime Minister stated that ‘ Wings ’ was the greatest picture he had ever seen.

For the opening night of Hoyt’s New Regent Theatre, Sydney, the proceeds being devoted to charity, the best seats brought three guineas each, while the lowest price of admission was 10s. The theatre opened with the screening of the Metro-Gold wyn-Mayer picture, ‘ Flesh and the Devil/ with Miss Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. It was, in Hawaii that Miss Gilda Gray danced the hula in ‘Aloma/ her first picture; in New York night clubs that she did the Black Bottom in ‘ Cabaret’; and it is in far-away Tibet that she does ‘ The Devil Dance/ ‘ The Black Hat/ ‘ The Nautch/ and other dances in ‘The Devil Dancer/ her first picture for United Artists. Clive Brook has the leading role. Three big Paramount pictures will be released at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, during April. They are: ‘Beau Sabreur/ a story of the Foreign Legion, by P. C. Wren, author of ‘Beau Geste’; ‘Serenade/- Adolphe Menjou’s latest picture; and ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes/ with Ruth Lee Tnvlor in the role of Lorelei.

‘ Second to None/ a British picture, will be released by Paramount in New Zealand this year. This picture was filmed with the full co-operation of the British Admiralty.,

Victor Hugo’s colossal work ‘ Les Miserables/ has been filmed by Universal, and will shortly be presented locally. It is noteworthy that the majority of the exteriors were made at the places Hugo describes in his hook, principally in the town of Digue and Montreuii-sur-Mer. A year was spent in making the necessary arrangements before filming was actually commenced. James Murray, King Vidor’s screen discovery, who recently appeared in ‘ Old Kentucky/ has been seelcted as the male lead in ‘ Tides of Empire.’ Murray’s rise in pictures has been phenomenal. He was featured by Victor in ‘ The Crowd/ and was recently given one of the most important parts of the season, that of Jim Kenyon in the screen version of ‘Rose Marie.’

Miss Josephine Dunn has been added to the cast of featured players in Universal’s production, ‘We Americans/ which Edward Sloman is directing. The cast embraces such players as George Sidney, Miss Patsv Ruth Miller, George Lewis, Eddie Phillips, Miss Bervl Mercer, John Boles, Albert Gran, Michael Visaroff, Miss Daisy Bolmove, Miss Rosita Marslini, Andy De Vine, Miss Flora Bramley, and Jake Bleifer. Richard Alien is to play the lead in Clara Bow’s next Paramount picture, ‘ Ladies of the Mob.’ William Wellman, who directed ‘ Wings ’ and 1 The Legion of the Condemned,’ will" handle the megaphone. Alien is soon to be seen in ‘ Under the Touto Him ’ with Mary Brian. Julian Johnson lias been assigned by Paramount to do the titles lor ‘ Doomsday,' Florence Vidor’s now Paramount picture. ‘ AVings/ Paramount's epic of tbo air, is now in its seventh month at tbo Criterion Theatre. New York. ‘AVings’ recently reached its 6001 li performance at the theatre.

Behe Daniels lias completed the production of ‘ Feel My Pulse.’ This Paramount picture was directed by Gregory La Cava. It will bo shown in New Zealand this year.
