ARRIVED.—ApriI 12. Kurow, s.s. (7.20 a.m.), 2,625 tons, Watson, from Auckland via ports. Kanna. s.s. (8.10 a.m.), 1.948 tons, Macdonald, from Wellington. SAILED.—ApriI 11. Oreti, s.s. (5.15 p.m.), 174 tons, M'Kenzie, lor Invercargill and Port Craig. The Kanna, which arrived this morning from Wellington direct to load general cargo, is to sail to-night ior Timaru, Pjcton, and Auckland. The Kurow, from Auckland via ports, arrived this morning to unload general cargo. She is to proceed to Bluff to-night, returning to Dunedin on Tuesday to load for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. The Oreti sailed last evening for Invercargill and Port Craig. 'The Knituna, which left Bluff last evening for this port, has been delayed by tbe northerly wind, and was expected at Port Chalmers this afternoon. She will come to town to-mor-row morning to_ discharge coal, and after discharge will proceed to Oaraarn to complete. The Corinna was to leave Nelson to-day for Wellington and Dunedin. She is to load here on Monday ior Nelson and New Plymouth. The Shaw, Savill steamer Mahia came up from Port Chalmers this afternoon, and was berthed at the Victoria wharf to discharge general cargo from Home. She will later go to Lyttelton, Nelson, and New Plymouth to finish discharging.

The Opihi is due to-night from Port Craig. She is to sail to-morrow for Timaru, Wellington, and Westport. An expected arrival at Auckland todav was the steamer Cowden Law with a full cargo of sulphur from Galveston (Texas). The vessel will discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, New Plymouth, Wanganui, and Newcastle. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Victor, which arrived at Auckland on Sunday from Brisbane, commenced loading at the northern port for London. She will next proceed to Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington to fill up She is to be despatched from Wellington at the latter end of the month for London via Montevideo. The motor ship William Penn has been withdrawn from the Atlant.cAnstralia service (Roosevelt Line), and replaced by the steamer Stanley, which left New Orleans on March 31 tor Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Fremantle. The Storm is to sail to-night tor Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. The Calm is due here on Monday from Bluff to load general cargo for Wanganui via ports. NOTICE TO MARINERS. A Gazette notice published by the Marine Department states that the occasional red light hitherto exhibited at the end of Mercury Bay' wharf, Whitianga, when vessels were expected, is now exhibited continuously. The Kauri Timber Company’s wharf at Whitianga has been demolished, and the white light discontinued. * NORTHUMBERLAND ROCK. The Commodore commanding the New Zealand station submitted to the Marine Department the following report:—“The search for the rock, presumed to have been struck by s.p. Northumberland in lat. 38deg 41b 30min south, long. 178 deg 14h 30m in east, was carried out by H.M.S Laburnum, Veronica, and "Whakakura on 13th. 14th, and 15th February, 1928, ami no obstruction was found. An area of three miles long by tw* miles wide was thoroughly swept to a depth of ten fathoms by H.M.S. Whakakura, under the direction of Commander H. L. Morgan, D.S.G., 11. N., who considers the area to bo clear of all obstructions to a depth of ton fathoms. During the sweep over the patch of shallower soundings shown on chart No. 3,343. lines of soundings were run by both Laburnum and Veronica. The results of these soundings are considered to be a reliable check on the accuracy of the position of the area swept, and also on the accuracy of the chart. The sweeping operations have been completed, and the buoys withdrawn.” GERMAN OPINIONS. The American news that the Blue Ribbon Line has been officially founded for the purpose of maintaining a four days 5 service across the Atlantic has caused considerable interest in Germany (states ‘Fairplay’). The opinion, however, is that it will he verv difficult to carry out the plans in their present form, both from a technical as well as from a commercial point of view. Speeds on the Atlantic service have increased more and more, and they will continue to do so, but the increase, based upon the technical development of hulls and engine weights, was by knots, and there is scarcely any possibility of jumping now to 33 or 35 knots without sacrificing that standard of accommodation to which transatlantic passengers have become accustomed during the last decades, and which they will not give up for the sake of saving half a day m the crossing. Apart from this, the idea, of building at once a series of six ships has no economic basis. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Wahinn, from Wellington, arrived at, Lyttelton at 6.40 a.m. to-day, and passengers and mails for the south connected with the first express. MANUKA LEAVES MELBOURNE. The Union Company advises that th' Manuka left Melbourne yesterday morning lor Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff with passengers and cargo She is duo here next Thursday, ami is to sail the following day for Bluff. THE CANADIAN TRANSPORTER. Advice from Colon states that the steamer Canadian Transporter arrived there on Monday from Montreal, en route to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. KARETU WITH CARGO. The Union Company’s steamer Karotu, from Sydney direct, is due here at 6 o’clock to-morrow morning to unload a quantity of general cargo. She is to sail on Saturday for Lyttelton, Oamaru. and Bluff to finish unloading MATAROA AT PANAMA. Cable advice from Panama announces the arrival there of the steamer Mataroa on Monday last from Auckland, where she left on March 3, VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL. .
