THE CHIEF EVENTS

tSPKCUL TO TUB ‘ STAB.’]

AUCKLAND, February 18. While attempting to lower the mile pacing record at the Otahuhu Trots today Nelson Fame stumbled and fell as ho was passing the mile post about two furlongs from home. He had been pacing brilliantly until the mishap took place, having covered the first halfmile in 59 3-ssec. He was brought back to the birdcage, and on an inspection being made no cause for the accident could bo ascertained. The record is held by Acron (2.3 3-ssec).

All the horses carded went to the post for the Otahuhu Troting Cup, for which event the public selected Concliff as the likely winner, while the Shrew next in request, while the bracket, Machine Gun and Sea Pearl, were also well supported. When they were let go Jewel Pointer stood on the mark and took no part in the race, and Peterwah was also slow to begin. First Carbine and The Shrew were soon in front, attended by Black Lila, Terence Dillon, and Peter Swift, this order being maintained past the stand the first time. Along the back there w'as little alteration, and as they came across the top The Shrew was just in front of Black Lila and First Carbine, with Terence Dillon and Peter Swift heading the rest of the field. As they passed the stand the second time the leaders were The Shrew and Black Lila together, closely followed by Terence Dillon, First Carbine, and Concliff, with Escapade and Peterwah (who had both broken several times) some distance away last. The Shrew and Black Lila had had enough when the hack stretch was rcacifcd, and Terence Dillon took comm**!# at this stage, and was not afterwards headed, winning by one and a-quarter lengths from Machine Gun, who beat Peter Swift by
