PALMERSTON CASE

GOODS STOLEN FROM SHOP YOUNG MAH GETS PROBATION Ivan Waller William Hanning appeared before His Honor Mr_ Justice Sim in the Supreme Court this morning for sentence for breaking and entering tho shop of James Moodie, at Palmerston, and stealing therefrom goods to the value of £l3 6s.Cd. Mr C. J. L. White, who appeared for the prisoner, said Hanning was twenty years of age and had hitherto borne'at good character. He had been employed on various farms, and his employers spoke highly of him. The present offence had been the outcome of drunkenness. It was holiday tipic, and tho fact that accused went about tho breaking into the shop in the way he did suggested that drunkenness was the cause. His Honor: '‘What share of_ the (roods did the other man (M'Kean) |et?” Hanning said he did not know. His Honor pointed out that Hanning had pleaded guilty to stealing goods to the value of £l3 6s 6rl. Who got them? Hanning said he did not see M'lxean leave the shop, and ho did not know what M‘Kean got. Ho had none of the goods himself. His Honor said tho value of the goods was based upon Miss Moodie’s calculations. Mr Adams said he would not care to rely upon the value given as the result of stock-taking. All along accused said that he had not got any of the goods. In admitting accused to probation, His Honor said the offence seemed to he the result of a. drunken freak. Apparently accused was not of strictly sober habits, and one of tho conditions of the probation would bo that he must take out a, prohibition order and renew it from time to lime. Nklr would lie ho allowed to enter billiard saloons. Another condition would ho that he pay £5 towards the costs of the prosecution. * Accused was released upon probation for three years.
