INNINGS DEFEAT AVERTED CENTURIES TO DICKINSON AND VORRATH THEY AND KNIGHT SAVE DEBACLE By the splendid batting of Dickinson, Knight, and Vorrath on Saturday afternoon and this morning, Otago compiled the respectable total of 374, and averted what looked like an innings defeat at the hands of Wellington. The conditions were per tec t for cricket when play was resumed this morning in the match between Otago and Wellington. The local team was in a bad position, but the hope was in everyone’s heart that the fine partnership set up by Knight and Dickinson on Saturday would be continued. Dickinson took the first over from M'Girr, which was a maiden. With the first ball of Badcock’sover Otago’s hopes were dashed, lor Knight played the ball straight Lambert’s hands at close mid-on. 7—S3 —193. Vorrath followed and placed the fourth ball to point. One was run, and a second taken tor an overthrow. Dickinson appeared to touch one of M'Girr’s, but James did not hold it. The over was a maiden. The field clustered around Vorntli on the off, six men being within half a dozen yards of the wicket, while one was close in at mid-on. M'Girr s next was another maiden. orrath straight drove Badcock and, the field all being close in, the hall went for _4. The next, the youngster also hit to the fence on the on-side, this bringing 200 up. Another 4 came to Dickinson for a leg hit off M'Girr, this making the batsman 80. r . Vorrnth placed Jhidcock nicely to square leg for 2, and showed good judgment in lifting the next to the on boundary and the fifth and sixth over the clustered field for 4 each. This made the batsman 20, 14 coming from the over. Dickinson at last got M'Girr straight for 1, bringing Vorratli opposite M'Girr lor the first time. He placed him nicely to the on for 2. Massey replaced Badcock, and Dickinson missed a swinger to leg. He mishit the next for a single. Vorrath placed the last prettily to square leg for a couple. A fast one to leg from M'Girr went for 2 byes, and off the next Dickinson was missed in the slips by Brice. Four more byes came from the last ball, which was also to leg. Vorrath continued to bat freely, dragging Massey to the ou for a couple and lifting him for 2 more. Trie field was now •well out. Dickinson hooked M'Girr for 3. Vorrath cocked the same howler high to deep point, but Badcock could only just touch it. single resulted. The Albion man opened out again to Massey, and lifted him to the on fence, and played him " iffishly ” to the slips for a couple, one being for an overthrow. Another lofty single made the batsman 40. Dickinson was having a charmed life, for Brice again dropped him at slip. This was the Cansbrook man’s fifth chance. Four to \ orrath to fine leg brought up 250, the scoring being very hrecy. The last ball went to the on for 2. . Dickinson swept on to a swinger from Massey, and it wont to long leg for 4, making him 90. Two to square leg to Vorrath off M'Girr brought up 260. Brice came on at the pavilion end, and Dickinson placed him in the slips for 1. A smartly run couple to the same batsman off M'Girr was followed by a single, making the Carisbrook man 95. He placed Brice prettily to leg for 2, and hooked him for 1. A single- to each, and the crowd cheered Dickinson prematurely. Vorrath brought up his 50 with a 4 to leg off M'Girr. A single to Vorrath, and then Dickinson reached his century by playing one to the off. At 1280 the score was 284 (Dickinson 103, A'orrath 62. extras 10). Lowry took the hall from M'Girr at the top end, and Dickinson drove him for a single. Vorrath, who was playing soundly, hit a full toss to the off for 3. He drove Brice for 1, and then Dickin son made a wild swipe at Brice, and was bowled. 8—104—290. Dimes came in, and swept the second ball to the leg fence, and drove the hist for a single. The first ball from Lowrv, however, got him Ibw. 8—5—295. ‘
Dougins was next, nnd hit the first, a full toss, for a couple. The next he placed to fine log for another couple. An uppish single to leg brought up 300, Otago thus achieving the scoring 300 or more in the second innings of each of the four matches played this season. Vorrath got Lowry for 2, and Douglas played Brice past the' slips for < a single. Yorrath reached 70 by lifting Brice to the press box screen, jibe ball having to be retrieved from the roof of the pavilion. Off the last ball the same batsman was missed by Worker off a poor, uppish stroke to deep midon. He hoisted Lowry’s last to leg for a single, and drove Brice’s first, a short one, for another. Douglas then cocked one of Brice’s up between the wickets, and Lowry, dashing in, just got it before it reached the ground. 9—G—3l2. Torrance was last man, and broke his duck with a straight_ single. Vordath also got one, repeating the stroke off Lowry. Two to Torrance, the second run being a close call for Yorrath, who square cut Brice’s first for a couple. Vorrath was missed off the next ball by Lowry at deep mid-otf, the fieldsman taking one hand to an easy catch. Torrance swept the next to leg for 4. The interest now lay in whether Olago could save the innings’ defeat and whether Yorrath would reach his century. Yorrath added 3 for a fineleg stroke, and Torrance survived an appeal for Ihw. Vorrath cut Brice twice for 2, and M'Girr came on in Lowry's place. Four byes off the second ball saved the innings defeat. Torrance straight drove the next for 2 and hit tlio next to the fine-leg fence, bringing up 340. The next hall the same batsman rattled up against the sight board, and the last went to leg for 2, 12 coming off the over. Badcock was brought on at the pavilion end. His second ball Vorrath lifted to Lamason in the long field—■ an easy catch— : but the fieldsman dropped it and the hall rolled to the Fence. The stroke brought Vorrath into the 90’a.
Torrance scored a single off M'Girr’s first, and Vorrath slipped him for 4, making him 95. Two leg byes came from Badcock’s next. Lambert took the ball at the top end, Vorrath getting a single to the on. Torrance scored 1 from the last ball, Vorrath thus losing the bowling. Torrance got another single off Badcock, leaving Vorrath with still-4 to get for bis 100. He was unable to score from the rest of the over, however. A single to the Dunedin man off Lambert’s first and Vorrath reached his 100 by lifting the next to the on fence. It had been a bright innings, and the youngster’s first century in any cricket. Massey came on at the pavilion end, and Torrance opened out and hit his first to the on fence. The next he misshit and Badcock took an easy catch at cover. 10—28 —374, Vorrath carried his bat for 103, made In as many minutes. This left Wellington 42 runs to make to win.
