M'Alpine set out with two others from Christchurch about 5 a.m. A few minutes later his car was disabled at the Iliccarton railway crossing. The car had almost cleared the rails, when it was hit by the engine of a goods train on the left rear wing. The impact spun the car round to make it face in the opposite direction to which it was going, and it came' to a stop in the channelling.
