ENORMOUS POWER

LARGEST ELECTRIC SHIP The s.s. California, the largest elec-trically-driven passenger vessel in the world, was launched on October 1 at Newport News, United States. Generating enough power to operate eight Panama Canals, this boat will be completely electrified and thoughly fitted with up-to-date appliances and conveniences for its passengers. The California will be driven by the turbine electric method of propulsion, using electric machinery throughout. Each turbine will have a maximum capacity of 8,500 shaft horse power, 2,880 revolutions per minute (120 revolutions per minute .propeller speed). These turbines will each be direct connected to an alternating current generator rated at 5,260 kilowatts, 2,640 revolutions per minute, 3,700 volts, threephase, and having a miximum continuous rating of 6,600 kilowatts, 4,000 volts. The ship will be completely equipped with all necessary electric auxiliaries for passengers, cargo, and crew, including elevators, dumb waiters, electric cooking equipment, deck cargo handling gear, boat handling equipment, warping winch, etc.
