EMPIRE TRADE

MR AMERY AT VANCOUVER

BENEFITS OF PREFERENTIAL TARIFFS.

Press Association—-By Telegraph—Copyright,

VANCOUVER, January 10.

Mr L. S. Amery, speaking here, said that Vancouver had strategic trade advantages with Asia and the Antipodes. Canada needed a tropical ami a, sub-tropical empire as a commercial complement, and had them in the British Empire. He urged the development of Empire trade. Ho admitted that the British fiscal system was too narrow, but the dominions would receive substantial benefits from a preferential tariff. He had seen prosperity in the Murray Valley, Australia, as the result of the preference on dried fruits and wines. He stressed the resources of New Zealand and Australia, and the position of Canada to build up commerce. The Empire had worked too much in watertight compartments, each thinking too much of local problems. Mr Amery closed with an avowal of faith in the new era of Empire unification of trade.
