VINCENT RACES

* KILBIRNIE WINS CUP. *[By St. Clair.] rrl OMAKAU, January 7, iiie attendance was excellent for the opening (J a y 0 f the Vincent Jockey Oliib s Meeting, and the weather very j ,i' K sultl 'y. -the track was hard and dusty after a Jong spell of hot weather. The fields were larger than usual. The starting was very iudifterent. The totalisator handled £3,947, as compared with £3,593 on the first day last yea i'. Puff was made a warm favorite' in the Ophir Hack Handicap, r< l vai^ on Real Glad and Barney Google to the home turn, and then led them and won easily. Royal Asset was well backed in the Lochella Cup Handicap, with Dark Spot and Qmckform next fancied. Pacific Star and Royal Asset led to three furlongs from home, then Quickform came up to him and led into the straight _ from Kilbirnie, and the latter beat Quickform home by a head. The winner was disqualified ior weighing in IJlh light. This was caused by the extreme heat and long delay at the start, as all of the other riders weighed in lighter than they went out. After inspecting tho scales, which were found to bo very dirty, tho Judicial Committee met again and rescinded the disqualification of Kilbirnie. Sheila Fleetwood was made a better favorite than Monevmore and Poolburn Lad in the New Year Harness Trot, in which the latter led all the way and won easily by six lengths from Golden Thread. Tho favorite finished very fast and was within two lengths of the second horse. Felony, who was a hot favorite in the Spottis Handicap, won very easily. Rory O’More, who was a good second favorite, broke away before the start, and getting rid of Voight after going about half a mile across country, disappeared in the hills. Leviska and Nelson Fay carried most of the money in the Vincent Trot, in which Guycara Dillon was given a moving start and quickly established a hundred yards lead from Leviska and Harrotha. At the end of a mile she looked a certain winner, but tired over the last two furlongs, and Harrotha, who showed good form at Invercargill, won nicely by a length from Sheila Fleetwood. The last race was run in a heavy shower, and Puff was again well backed, but she had to strike her colors to the outsider, Tardy. Miss Trillion led for half a mile, and then faded out. An inquiry was held into tho running of Martis in the Matakamii Handicap, but after hearing the evidence of the owner and trainer it was decided to take no action.
