Hickman pleaded .“Not guilty by reason of insanity ” to the indictment charging him with complicity in the murder of Iw Thoms, a suburban druggist. Tho plea bore an admission of guilt, making the state of bis mentality the sole issue. ( After, his arrest in connection with the murder of tho twelve-year-old schoolgirl, Marion Parker, Hickman was asked if he had killed any other person, He replied: “I killed Thoms, a Pasadena druggist, while Willoughby Hunt and myself were holding up his place on Christmas Eve last year.” Tho police immediately arrested Hunt, who strenuously denied tho crime. Hickman recalled tho details of the shooting, and declared that Hunt was wounded by a policeman while escaping from gaol. A physician examined Hunt, and found a bullet star on his shoulder. Hunt later confessed, but claimed that Hickman fired tho fatal shots.]
