A TERRIBLE DEATH
SHOCKING LORRY ACCIDENT LOAD OF POWDER- EXPLODES. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, LONDON, January 5. (Received January 6, at 10.50 a.m.) A horrible accident occurred at Hockliffe, when a motor lorry skidded through a hedge and went down a bank, and the petrol tank exploded, setting fire to a load of six tons of phosphorus powder contained in shell cases. The driver, Rivett, was pinned down, and screamed: “I’m burning alive.” As the rescuers were striving their hardest to rescue him the load exploded, injuring four, including a man named Wagstaffe, who caught fire and was partially blinded. Rivett suffered an agonising death.
