WANGANUI, January 5, The drowning of Claude a married man, or Auckland, a!Td Howard Bernard Loft, the nine-year-old son of a Westmere family, formed the tragic end to a picnic party on the Wanganui River to-day. Mr Mulvanev and his wife were spending the holiday with the Lofts, and with Mrs Loft and the latter’s four children, they went for a holiday outing. The deceased boy was bathing, and when he stepped oyer a ledge into deep water got into difficulties; and, though Mulvaney was not a swimmer, ho went to his assistance and both sank out of sight. Two other children who were also in trouble were saved by their mother. The bodies were recovered by tho police half an hour later. The boy was found tightly clasped in Mulvaney’s arms.
