GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

ANMUAL BREAK-UP

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY At the annual ceremony of the Otago Girls’ High School last nignt, which was largely attended in His Majesty’s Theatre, a splendid programme was presented by tiio girls prior to the award of prizes. Mr W. Paget Gale is deserving of praise for the slate ol efficiency attained by the Scliool Choir under his direction, and their selections were much appreciated. Misses Dora Drake and Hattie Arthur gave a duet, and solos were pleasingly rendered by Misses Bertha Rawlinson, Dora Drake, and Daphne Murdoch. A' feature of the evening was the display of physical drill given by pupils of Forms 111., IV-, V. and Vi., under the direction ot the sports mistress (Miss H. Taylor), whose squads introduced some and highly beneficial exercises. An English sword dance was also much appreci-' ' ated. „ ... Apologies for absence from Sir William Sim, Hon. W. Downie Stewart, and the mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner) were road by the chairman (Dr G. E. Thompson), who referred to several changes in the staff that had taken place during the year. They were sorry to lose the services of Miss Geliately, who had been a member of the staff for so long and had rendered splendid service. She was retiring, and would curry with her the best wishes of the

board. To Miss Jones and Miss Clement, who were also severing their connections with the staff, tho board s best wishes wore extended. During the year Miss A. Morrll and Miss J. R. M'Kinnon had been appointed to the staff, and by the appointment of Miss H. Taylor as sports and games mistress the board had _ realised its desire to appoint a full-time mistress for spoils and games. Mr Northey had done yeoman service for some years, but Ins services were now wholly required by the Boys’ High School. The board offered its congratulations to the Girls High School on its line record in Sports and games during the recent year. The school had won the interschools swimming relay shield for the fifth year, the A grade hockey championship, A and B grades net ball cups, and the Shacklock Cup (for the Junior Lawn Tennis Association’s championships). These splendid results were due in a large measure to Miss Taylor and other members of the staff, to Miss Campbell for tennis especially. , Miss Patterson, the Otago ladies’ tennis champion, also lent her and advice in training the girls. Ho urged the girls to bo proud of their school, for it was produc-

ing a fine type of woman. In introducing Mrs W. N. Benson to the audience, Dr Thompson said that she was a very distinguished woman, and for ten years had been on the University staff, while for four years she was professor of home science. She had travelled very widely'. 4 ‘ Loyalty ’ was the subject of Mrs Benson’s address, and in opening she referred to the loyalty of the Japanese, who reverenced and almost idolised their Emperor, and to the loyalty of the Chinese to their relatives and ancestors. National loyalty was merely an enlargement of family loyalty, and the English idea of loyalty was loyalty to country. The destiny of a nation depended on the thoughts and ideals of j the individual, and while being loyal to one’s country it was possible to sympathise with and understand the loyalty of other peoples to their countries. The League of Nations Union and the Institute of Pacific Relations were instances of the realisation of the ideal of sympathy and understanding between the nations. Each form of loyalty was intermingled with the other, and each individual was responsible. 'So sho would say to tho girls to show loyalty to the homo, to the school, to their country, and to humanity at large. Tho speaker went on to congratulate the principal (Miss King) and her staff on the excellent work achieved during tho year, and she urged girls in the lower forms to consider the advisability of i staying on at school until they matriculated. for matriculation represented a ! certificate of general knowledge. To | those girls leaving school she urged : that those who were not needed at homo should enter some form of training, and she stressed tho possibilities of the Home Science course, which led along many avenues and was suitable 1 even for girls who were not fond of : teaching. | Tho form prizes and sports prizes i wore presented by Mrs Benson, and ! Mrs S. M. Park presented the Navy ; League prizes, speaking briefly on,.the j aims of the Navy League. Prizes were presented to the followI ing pupils:— I Madge Evaliue Martin, dux of school 1 (Board of Governors’ gold medal). Form VI-L I.—E.
