ARGHERFIELD The St. Andrew’s Hall was well filled last night, when the annual break-up ceremony of Archerfield College took place. After the pupils had marched m to their places the annual report was read by Mrs T. Nisbet, the ex-princi-pal, (in the platform were Mrs G. M. Cleghorn (principal), . Mrs T. Nisbet (ex-principal), Dr E. N. Merrington, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., who presented the prizes The annual report stated that two girls had gained higher leaving certificates and eleven their proficiency certificates. Two girls had obtained their L.T.C.L. in elocution (the highest honor yet attained by pupils of the school i'n that subject); six girls passed the music examinations of the Associated Board; fourteen girls passed the examinations of the Royal Life Saving Society from the elementary grade to the award of merit, the highest award of the society ; forty-eight gained swimming certificates; eleven first-aid certificates; and thirteen home nursing certificates.

In a short address, Dr Alerrington welcomed Airs Nesbit, who had returned from Australia. He was delighted to see her in her accustomed place, and said that during her absence the work had been carried on by her splendid adjutant, Airs Clcghorn. In his opinion Airs Clcghorn was one of the finest teachers and tho best principals he had met. The report disclosed_ a range of activities among the girls that was astounding, and in these days of occasional gloom and depression, it did people good to attend such a function as the annual break-up of a school, as the optimistic atmosphere was communicated to all. Tho excellent organisation and discipline maintained in the school was favorably commented upon by the speaker, who said tlmt it pointed to a hidden perfection in all school arrangements He advised the girls to continue their study and games after they had left school, ami in the words of H. G, Wells, urged them to “ see life steadily and see it whole,” to cultivate wide interests, and to look for beauty in the ordinary, everyday things around them. The prize list reads as follows: Form Vl.—Dux of school: I. Thomas Proximo accessib to dux: D. Davies.

SOUTH OTAGO HIGH Tho closing ceremony of the South Otago High School to-day took an unusual form. A garden party was hold, so that the parents, especially of the country children, might have an opportunity of seeing the school and the grounds, which have been greatly improved during tbe year. The whole function was carried out by the pupils, each form contributing a sinall play or character song. Others recited or sang, while a new feature was a couple of essays read by two pupils on ‘ International Peace ’ and ‘ The League of Nations.’ The chief speaker was the Rev. Roy Alley, who gave a very thoughtful address on ‘The True Aim of Education.’ Mr Alley forcibly demonstrated that an education of wide general culture was the best for making true citizens, and summed up his address by pointing out that the pupil who had best grasped tbe aim of education was the one who, after he left school, pursued his studies, impelled by his own desires. Mr F. Waite, M.P., moved a vote of thanks to the High School Board and staff, to which Messrs Landels (chairman), Marshall (Kaitangata), and the principal (Mr John Reid) replied. This year it had been decided that prizes would not be awarded. Mr Landels presided, and reviewed the work of the year. < The principal read his yearly report, and said words of farewell to those pupils who were leaving tho school. KAIXORAI KINDERGARTEN The break-up ceremony in connection with the Kaikorai Free Kindergarten was held yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large number of parents and friends. Miss Brickell, who is ono of the ladies who takes a very great interest in the school, presided, and in the course of a few remarks thanked the mothers and fathers for their assistance during tho year in raising funds for the benefit of the kindergarten. _ The Rev. W. Saunders, in addressing those present, referred to kindergarten work and its value. The children attending the school, who number about thirty, then entertained those present with _ a series of simple songs and engaged in a number of games which they evidently heartily enjoyed. They also presented to their parents a number of little presents they had made during the year. The teaching; staff consists of Miss G. Saunders, who has for assistants Miss S. Mac Lean and Miss G. Stewart, and those ladies were made tho recipients of presents from the parents in appreciation of tho services they had rendered; Miss Saunders receiving a beautiful bag and Misses MacLean’ and Stewart two pretty pieces of china. The hall in which the break-up was held was nicely decorated for the occasion with streamers of various shades, made by the children themselves. There will bo a children’s party in Sutherland Hay this afternoon at 4.30. WAKARI ' Standard Vl.—Dux of school: Jean Huddavt (gold medal). Girls: Freda Cubitt 2, Mavis Darling and Myra Edwards 3.
