SATURDAY’S RAGING OALNAHINE A WONDER Thanks to the fine weather, the good handicapping by Mr Brinkman, the splendid management by Mr B. S. Irwin at the head of the stewards and Mr C. R, Caffin in control of the details, pins the eagerness to win displayed by owners and horsemen, it was a great day’s racing at Forbu'ry on Saturday to wind up the so-called Spring Meeting that is really in summer time. There was an enormous crowd, and the totalistor was well up. Several of the races evoked excitement, as, for instance, when Swiftbiho outstayed Randolph and Avalanche in the Brighton Handicap, when a dead heat resulted in the Victoria Handicap, and, most of all, when Dalnahine displayed marvellous form in tho big event. The pivot incident of that race was at the end. of tho straight, beginning .tho last lap. Butterfield had to drive Dalnahine at his top to get a position before reaching the turn, and ho only just did it. Kate Thorpe kept the lead for six furlongs, whan Desert Star passed her and that was the end of it. Lingfiekl made a bold attempt, and in the straight seemed sure of second money, but she broke near to the post, and while Desert Star was passing the judge five lengths to the good Lingfield broke and lost the place to Quality by half a length. Bingen laid led into the straight, whore Bob Logan challenged, and then Final M'Kinncy made a winning rush, getting homo by half a. length. 801 l Harold a length away, Hannni fourth. Time, 2min 12- 3-sscc, NOTES ON THE RACING Though rain threatened almost throughout the afternoon, only a few light misty showers fell during .Saturday afternoon, but the temperature was very cold for the big crowd that attended at Forbury to take part in Lite concluding day of the Spring Meeting. The track was in good order, and with one watering tho dust was well kept down. The racing was very interesting, and backers of favorites . had a bettor run, for out of the first six races one won, and five of them were second. Tho race for the Forbury Handicap was one of tho host over seen on the track, and the win of the locally-owned Dalnahino was a popular one and one of the most meritorious wins ever recorded at Forbury. Ho bad to go outside bis hold for over a mile to get the rails. After ho loft them at the end of half a mile, .and for nearly a whole lap, he was outside four sulkies. His gamencs,s and stamina won him tho race, and alter this race he is entitled to-be included with Win Soon, Cathedral Chimes, Logan Chief, and Native Chief, who were also bred in Southland, and have brought tho southern province into'prominence in the trotting world. Tina Recovery Handicap produced another lino finish, for, after Bingen Lad had assumed a commanding lead ami the race looked to he all over, he began to stop badly in the run home, and 100, yds from tho post four, horses closed on him, and a very fine finish resulted in 'Final M'Kinney, ono of tho best sprinters in commission in the dominion to-day,- getting up and winning by a, narrow margin from Bob Logan. Thin win gave tho well-known horseman, J. MT.ennan, his sixty-eighth win in mile races. Hawkesbury Pride.skipped Caterpillar, Hawkesbury Pride, and Jade

all well back oil. Weathers tone, ilia Audubon, Caterpillar, Peter Boy, and Lord Tracey all lost ground at the start, from which Hawkesbury Pride went away very smartly, and was followed by Grcyivood, Dolores, and Peter tho First passing the stand. Grey wood broke going along the back, and Hawkesbury Prido led into the last lap, followed by Dolores and Leu Wood. Hawkesbury Prido was still in charge at the far turn, where Dolores, who was lying second, just in front of Lew Wood and Nelson M'Kinuey, broke, and Hawkesbury Pride and Nelson M'Kinney at tho top of tho straight, where Nelson M'Kinnoy also faltered a little. At tho distance post Len Wood put in a good run, and boat Nelson M'Kinnoy by two lengths, Hawkesbury Prido half a' length off third, followed by Dolores, Peter the First, and Greywood. Investments, £2,l2D£. « * * All started in the Advance Handicap, for which Heroic was sent out a warm favorite, carrying over .three times as many investments as Nelson M'Elwyn, with Sadie Hnon, tho bracketed pair Warepa and Dillon Blake, and Stockade Junior all fairly evenly backed. Warepa began very' smartly, and at once went to tho front, leading Dahlia Dillon, Heroic, and Kinney Dillon. Quota lost Jus chance at tho start. At tho end of a mile and entering the last lap Warepa was still in charge, and bad Kinney Dillon, Stockade Junior, Dahlia Dillon, and the favorite in close order lying next. At the far turn Warepa was just in front of Kinney Dillon and tho favorite. The latter got a good run on the rads turning into the straight, but could not reach Warepa, who beat him by two lengths. Sadie Hnon was three lengths oil third, followed by Kinney Dillon, Stockade Junior, aiM Nelson M'Elwyn. Investments, £15,326. There was nothing scratched in tho Empire Handicap, fur which there was close betting between the bracketed pair Pointalena and Omaha and Acre, tho former chance starting a few shillings the better favorite. General Bingen and Fashion Queen■ were tho best backed of the others. The latter lost a little ground at tho start, from which Queen’s General was tho first to show out, but after going a couplo of furlongs gave way to Van Director and Bobort Bell. Tho hitter ran to the front going along tho back, and led Queen’s General, Van Director, and Pointalena round tho far turn. Bobort Bell and Queen’s General wore on terms entering tho straight, then the latter drew right away and won easily by four lengths from Pointalena, who beat Bobort Bell by a length and a-half for second money. Jolly Chimes, Acre, and General Bingen: were next. Invest-, incuts, £3,420J-.

hi the Brighton Handicap Ingle Bingen was withdrawn, and Randolph was sent out a slightly hotter favorite than Nelson Ata, with Swil'tbine and Leu Wood (penalised 24yds. lor his previous win) also well backed. Master Retailed for two furlongs, then Peter Boy took charge and led Master Peter, Jade, and Avalanche. The latter ran to the front at tho far turn, and quickly drew out with a good lead from dado and Peter Boy. With seven furlongs to go Avalanche was five lengths clear of Nelson M'Kinney, with Swiftbine next. These three led through tho straight, and going along the back Randolph closed up, the four being in a bunch two furlongs from home. Nelson M'Kinney was tho first to head Avalanche, and led him into tho straight, with Swifthine and Randolph handy. Swif thine run to the front opposite the grand, stand, and beat Randolph homo by three lengths, with Avalanche a length and a-half off third and Nelson M'Kinney and Jade next. Investments, £3,509*.

All went to tho post for the Forbnry Handicap, and the bracketed pair Dalnahine and Terence Dillon were heavily hacked, carrying nearly twice -as many investments as Talent, with tho -bracketed pair Bunny Logan and Troiand and Author Jinks also well hacked. Event and Away lost their chances at tho atari, and Bell Harold and M.encmher Jed Downcast, Bonny Logan, and. Tremand for nearly a lap, Dalnahino making up his ground very fast. After going six furlongs Downcast look the lead and led Bell Harold, Meucmbcr, and Trcnaml for the nox't lap, over the last half of which Dalnahino was going round outside lour sulkies, and entering tho hast Jap he was half a length behind Downcast. This pair led into tho back .stretch, and then Dalnahino went to tho front., and at the far turn Dalnahino was two lengths dear of Bonny Logan and Terence Dillon. Once in tho straight the latter made a challenge to catch In's stable mate, but Jailed to do so by a length and a-half, Dalnahino putting up ono of the finest winning performances ever seen on the track. Trennnd was two lengths away third, followed by Author Jinks, Talent, and Bonny Logan. Investments, £5,133*. a # A * All started in tho Tainui Handicap, and Quality was sent out a much better favorite than Desert Star, who she only heat by a very narrow margin the previous day, and wa.s meeting him on ],2yds worse terms. Linglickl and Pointalena were tho next best hacked. Kate Thorpe went off at a great pace, and led Desert Star for six furlongs, then the latter took charge, and led tho rest of the way, winning easily by live lengths from Quality, who just got up in time to beat Linglickl, who broke on the post, out of second money. Evclvn Locanda and Kate Thorpe were next. Fashion Queen ran last all the way after losing a little at tho start. Investments, £4,231. a * * ff In the Victoria Handicap all started, and Engagement was sent out a few pounds better backed Ilian Ingle Bingen, this pair being muili better bucked tlian Young Blake, with Frisco Beau, Hci'bilwiii, and Little Logan the best backed of tho others. Hcrbilwin wont away well, and led Proud Ata .-ml Ingle Bingen for six furlongs; then tho latter broko badly, and Frisco Beau ran into fourth place. These four led F ••oiighont the next round, Engagement having lost her chance by breaking. Entering the la.st lap. Hcrbilwin was Mill well clear from Proud Ata mid Little Logan, and at tbo far 'urn Little Logan ran into second place. Herbilwin was stopping as bo raced down the straight, and little Logan just caught him in time to dead heat. Young Blako was eight lengths away third, followed by Proud Ata and Frisco Beau. Investments, £4,224. **, * * Away and Dalnahino were withdrawn from til© Recovery Handicap, and in a, good betting race Bell Harold was sent out a little better favorite than Bob Logau, with Final M'Kinney and llaunui also well hacked. Haunui was first out, Jolly Chimes rearing up, and lost his chance. After going half a furlong Bingen Lad ran .to the front, and at the end of three furlongs was a dozen lengths clear from Haunui and Boh Logan. Going along the back Bingen Lad was still a dozen lengths clear, and still going well. At the far turn Bob. Logan went after Bingen laid, who began to ston directly lie entered tho straight. Then'Final M‘Kinney got clear, and. finishing wide out, lie got up to beat Bob Logan by half a length. Bell Harold was oyer a. length away third, and Haunui and Bingen Lad were next.
