HECTOR LECKIE BEATS 'CARR . A fifteen-round professional....contest between Hector Leckio :(Dunedin, 9.1) and Jimmy. Carr (Millcrton, 9.2) ended somewhat sensationally Carr bemgi knocked put in ’the third round after haring taken the count for -9sce in the same round (says an Invercargill Press Association telegram). The bout was staged at Winton under rhe .auspices of the Bluff Boxing Association. Leckio was! too smart and clever for his opponent, and well deserves the victory. In rbvind ono'Leekio (rushed Hs-bpi/o-nent to the ropes, and appeared to ' nvo a slight advantage at in-fighting. Lcckie did most of the leading, and was mostly tlm aggressor. The gong went with Lcckie. holding a slight advantage. The referee’s “break” was frequently beard in round two. Smart footwork by Lcckie •enabled him to score and get out of trouble. Carr, liowever,. was willing to mix it, and connected with a right swing to the ribs, Leckie again was tho aggressor, and even at this stage it looked the Dunedin bpy would - prevail. . He. sent in a well-timed right to tho chin that rattled Carr badly, and probably paved the way to the sensational finish m the third round. V . In-round .three Leckie took up the offensive immediately, and eliucbing saved Carr. The Coast man was rushed to the ropes to take, a pummelling on the ribs and head that spelt the beginning of the end. A .perfectly-timed right to the. head knocked Carr through tho ropes. Ho took the count for nine, but came up only to slop a right and left to tho head and chin' which put him down for the full count two minutes after tho third round had commenced. It was a popular victory, Lcckie being cheered.

JOHNNY LECKIF v. GRIFFITHS. With commendable enterprise and_ at considerable expense the OtagoJioxing Association will stage, in the Kensington Drill Hall, on Saturday next tho (iftcon-round contest for tho featherweight championship of New Zealand. A purse of £l5O will be at stake, tho 1 contestants being Johnny Leckie (bolder) mid Tommy Griffiths (challenger). Both bo.vs aro local products, who mad© their debut in Dunedin, though both have since become famous outside their homo town. Griffiths is remarkably keen on securing tho title, but Leckio is just as determined to retain it, so a stirring contest should bo witnessed. Leckio is perhaps tho more aggresisve boxer, but Griffiths has general ring cleverness and experience, and the verdict at present looks very open. Dunedin enthusiasts should witness one of tho best bouts of tho year, which will bo preceded by three stirring preliminaries. 'Mr Jack Kihnartin will referee tho professional contest. Tho ring is being erected 4ft above tho Mound, so that patrons in all parts of tho hall will have -an unobstructed vloav. Special lighting is being arranged over the ring, the rest of tho hall being in darkness.
