The deal was so cleverly conducted that it has not affected tiro quotations. [the Chancellor of the Exchequer stated in the House of Commons that Lady Houston had presented the Exchequer with £1,500,000 as an act of grace, but not admitting legal liability. He had accepted the sum, which was offered spontaneously from her desire to help the finances of the country. Ho could not at present' reveal what the sura would be if legal liability was proved.]
