THREE-YEAR-OLDS iH THE DiELBOURfiE C-JP r L’ho brilliant victory registered by Trivalve in this year’s Melbourne Cup is widely estimated tn be one of the most noteworthy performances registered by a three-year-old m the '(treat Flcmington race. It may not prove uninteresting to review past performances registered by three-year-olds in the two-mile race. In the Melbourne Cup of 1877 a brace of tbroo-vear-olds in the shape of Chester (6.12) and Savanaka (6.2) fought out the finish, and in the race of 1880 thcie was a similar record, Grand Flaneur (6.10) and Progress (5.10) being the pair to fight out the finish. The Melbourne Cup of 1883 saw a throe-year-old in the shape of Martini-Henry (7.5) home in front, ami then 12 years elapsed before Anraria (7.4) increased the three-ycar-old record. The succeeding year saw Nowhaven carry 7.13 to victory, which still stands as the highest weight carried successfully by a three-year-old in the Melbourne Cup. In 1899 Merriwce won under 7.6, and in the following year Clean Sweep scored under 7.0. Lord Cardigan (6.8) won in 1903, and in 1906 Poseidon carried 7.6 to victory; then, at an interval of a year, Lord Nolan (6.10) beat the opposition, Prince Foote (7.8) scoring next year. In 1915 Patrobns scored under 7.6, three years subsequently Artilleryman (7-6) scored, and in 1921 Sister Olive (6.9) won. One of the host performances registered by a three-year-old in the Melbourne Cap is held to be that for which An nun urns responsible in the race of 1897. With 8.6 Aurum was called upon to carry an impost 1411) in excess of weight-fnr-ago, and lie ran a close third to the five-year-old Ganlns (7.5) and the four-year-old The Grafter (7.7). J. Scohie, who trains Trivalve, considers the Cyklon colt to be the best three-year-old he has had under his charge, and as the Flemingtou trainer ’ has trained many noteworthy performers, it may bo accepted that Trivalvo is estimated to he a colt entitled to be ranged np in the category of the great. mm WHERE IT WENT. THE V.11.C. CARNIVAL. Mr E. E. D. Clarke, owner of Trivalve, easily headed the list of stakoI winners at the V.11.C. Spring Meeting. The figure was £14,534. Trivalvo, who won both the Victoria Derby and .the I Melbourne Cup, won all but £IOO of this, which was brought to Mr'Clarke through the agency of Mistral, who ran second in the November Nursery. Silvius put Sir Sidney Kidman second, with £4,291, by his second in the Melbourne Cup and wins in the Mcl- ! bourne Stakes and C. B. Fisher Plate. Mr E. Moss finished up third on the list. Vaals won for him £2,658. Following is a list of the chief prizewinners : ’E. E. D. Clarke, first Melbourne Cup, £9,993; first Victoria Derby, £4,436; second November Nursery, £109; total, £14,534. Sir Sidney Kidman, Second Melbourne Cup, £2,000; first Melbourne

TRIVALVE, [.IRfERIGK, AND GLOAMING The success of Trivalvo and Limerick during the past lew weeks has prompted their respective admirers to make claims that Gloaming’s record stake winnings, £43,100, arc likely to be passed by these two horses. This season Trivnlve has ■won throe times in four starts, and _ last season be missed a. place four times in ton races. His place record is as follows: — AT TWO YEARS. Lcgers included in his Autumn engagements it seems only a matter of Trivalvo retaining his present form to pass Rauipion’s total. Limerick has boon racing a season longer than Trivalvo, and Ills richest stake, the A.J.C. St. Legcr, was only worth £2,484, as against Trivalve’s £10,198 in this year’s Melbourne Cup. It is appropriate at this stage to mention the stake-winning records of the ton most famous Australians, as under;—

JOTTINGS Solfcrilc, who won the Winter Cup last August, has been turned out for a spell. The South Canterbury Jockey Club lias received excellent entries lor its meeting next week. Nominations for the D.J.C. Summer Meeting, to be held on December 26 and. 27, close this evening at 5 o’clock. The Southland Bacing Club offers £BBS for the four trotting races on its programme at. New Year time. The two trotting races on the Yvymill am programme have been endowed with £330. The three hurdle races on flic ViyiidliuiTi find Southland Clubs piogrammes for their New Year meetings arc worth £575. , Jewel Pointer has now _ won three £I,OOO races within a fortnight. With his stable mate, Amaris, Mr TVoodubo has been having a very good run at the Addington and Otahulny meetings. Tommy Metcalf won on a, ramc outsider for a good stable at the Genu meeting. His many /friends at Wingatui hope that lie will continue his good luck. , Booster, who ns a young iiorse was trained by D. P. Wilson, jum, has returned to that trainer's stable, and will lie a hard horse to boat in some of tbo sprint races at holiday time. The principal winning owners at Wintun were:—A. Chisholm £360, L Smith £230, A. Savage £220, J.Lmd' sav £l9O, Grieve Bros. £162 10s, .7. Graham £145, S. Todd £lls. Mrs Stiven.s £lls, D. T. Wilson £loo. The Win to n Jockey Club paid om totalisator duty £640 7s 3d, diviclend dutv £1.152 19s, stakes duty £l2O. other privileges £24 7s 9d, amusement tax £lO2 0s 6d, making a grand total of £2,039 14s 6d. ' The handicappor has taken no risks with'Receipt in the Flying Handicap fIC Timaru after her poor displays at Riccartou this month. With 9st Hb she lias been harshly treated.

Magna Charta has been placed in f work again. Ho is si.ro to win races, over short distances if he Stands np +o a preparation. ' ■ , ,1 Money Order has been handicapped at 9.6 in the Flying Handicap at, Timaru, but bo has hardly done enough work to beat the more-seasoned performers in the race. 1 The two-year-old races at the Dunedin Meeting at Christmas time are ’ sure to attract‘good attention Irom owners,' and it is hoped_ that the chib’s new handicappcr will not set such a high scale of weights as has been done lor a few seasons back in these races. At the meeting of the committee of the Gore Trotting Club on Saturday night, the Railway Department advised that with the club’s approval it was intended to have a clerk in the' secretary’s office at the course on the occasion of the club’s Boxing Day meeting ior the purpose of attending to tho trucking arrangements for owners. It was decided to approve of tho department’s action. The ‘Lyttelton Times’ says;— “ Commendation has been turned out at Dannevirke for a six months’ spell. His feet were troubling him on bis return from Australia, and this might have proved the cause of his indifferent form subsequent to his first race in Now South Wales. He can be dismissed so far as the Auckland Meeting is concerned, also from autumn racing. His next appearance in public will bo in the spring, possibly in Australia.” The Gore Trotting Club has purchased a very handsome, canteen of cutler,,, valued at £25, which xs.to bo added to the £450 stake given for the Gore Trotting Club Handicap, to be run on Boxing Day. This race always attracts a good entry, and it is pleasing to see the club has decided to give the owner of tho winner a trophy that Mill serve to remind him of his success. I have to acknowledge receipt of a copy of tho Vincent Jockey Club’s programme for its annual race meeting to be held on January 7 and 9, at Matakanui, near Omakau. _ Besides two valuable trophies, £B3O is given in stakes for fourteen races. Both upon horses and hacks and trotters tire catered for, and this year the racing will be hold on a splendid grass track. Last -year tho duat was very bad at this meeting, but since then the club lias soivn thb track down in grass, and with irrigation a first-class grass track lias been secured. Nominations close on December 28, and Mr R. Mce will declare his handicaps for the first day on December 31 Tho Southland Racing Club’s programme for its New Year Meeting .will distribute £1,655 in stakes. Tho Invercargill Cup will be worth £1,U50 this year, including a very handsome silver cup presented to flic club by Mr W. F. James. The programme is an attractive one, and sure to appeal to owners, as in addition to the well-endowed open events good stakes are, offered for hurdle racers, hacks, and trotters. The nominations close on December 16, and the handicaps for tho first day will be published by Mr IT. A. Pierce on the morning following the Dunedin Christmas meeting. The programme of the Wyndham Racing Club’s Animal Meeting, to be held on New .Year’s Day, lias been issued, and the club will distribute £1,700 in stakes. The most important race, the Wyndham Cup, has been endowed with £SOO and a cup valued at £SO to the winner. Tho President’s Handicap, run over six furlongs, carries £220. and there tiro throe hack races , worth £lls (five furlongs), £l5O (six furlongs), and £l6O (mile), and a hurdle face, £175, run oyer thirteen furlongs. Nominations will close on December 12, and Mr H. A. Pierce will declare his handicaps on December 20A successful trainer, and an owner who won a lot of races with a small number of horses, should be good qualifications for a successful handicapper, for he must have been a good judge of form to have been as successful at the racing game as Mr Joseph Biggins has been over the last 30 years With these credentials to hack him, and plenty of self confidence to' help him, Mr Biggins should make a good handicapper for the Dunedin Jockey Club. Ho is a close student of form, and his appointment will carry tho confidence of all owners and trainers who know him. It is pleasing to note that .the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club have, at last appointee] a local applicant to an important position.
