CANTERBURY TURF NOTES

[Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, November 24. Rapier was out to-day, but _he did only gteady pacing. His easy time will last for another week, after which H. Nurse will commence to send him ajpng a bit faster in view of the holiday racing. He is so well at present that ho can soon bo brought to his best again while his trainer is waiting to waiting to see the weights before ho makes definite arrangements. It seems fairly certain that Rapier will bo a competitor in the Auckland Gup. The l)crby winner Agnon looks in capital health at present, and ho is striding out very freely in useful tasks, He seems to bo sounder now than before the recent meeting, and, provided all goes well now, he should be a better horse by New Year’s Day, when ho will bo required for the Great Northern. Footfall and Paperchaso have not been sot any serious tasks since they resumed work following ou a short spell after their recent racing. They are both in excellent order, however, and they will soon bo striding along again. , . With his Auckland engagements in view, Count Cavour is still enjoving an easy time, on which ho is thriving. His threc-ycar-old mate, Satrap, is also doing light tasks. These two should be at their best by the time they have to leave for Auckland. Martama has two engagements on the first day of the South Canterbury Meeting, and it is not certain whethei lie will rim in the Midden Plate or the President’s Handicap. The latter event at a mile may suit him better than the scramble of a maiden race. F. 1). Jones will probably take Stormy, Arikiwai, and the two-year-old Island Fastness to the South Canterbury Meeting, but Stormy is not at his best yet. These three may form Jones’s te'ara for the holidays, with the Manawatu and Marton Meetings as a likely programme. J. Uoyd has Nincompoop looking m good enter lor his engagements at the South Canterbury Meeting. Ho will probably race Nincompoop and Tarlotou during the holidays at the Dunedin, Wyndham, and Invercargill Meetings.
