POLICE COURT
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2-1, (Before Mr J. K. Bartholomew, S.M.) REMANDED. Charged with obtaining taxi hire by means of fraud, Materia Franklin, a Maori woman, was remanded to Invercargill, whore tho offences (there were two informations') are alleged to have been committed. The amounts involved wore respectively £7 2s (id and .915 10s, and the complainants are Alexander Calder and Alfred John Banks. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. A young man named Basil Tennyson Smith came up for sentence on a charge of converting to his own use a sum of £l3 2s (id. which he had received on behalf of his employers (the Exhibition Demolition Co., Ltd.), thereby committing fraud. The Magistrate said that he had received a full report from the probation officer, and, after consideration, had decided, on acount of accused’s youth, to admit him to probation for a period of two years. The conditions would include the restitution of the money involved and also that matters of his finance, amusement, and choice of companions be under the supervision of the probation officer, to whom accused must report weekly.
