LOATHES AUSTRALIA
MADAME ALDA’S CUTOIifIST NEW ZEALAND A LOVELY P.LACE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, VANCOUVER. November 12. “Never again! I’m through with Australia,” Madame Alda said on arrival by the Aorangi in an interview while waiting for her baggage at the Customs shed “What a place!” she shouted, waving her arms. “ The people arc simply loathsome, the hotels are abominable, the theatres unendurable, and the railways insufferable. There is no heat in that country. I didn’t find a concert hall with a temperature higher than an icebox and me in the most dccolletto gown 1 I’d rather sing in this shed. New Zealand is different. It is a lovely place, with lovely people and a lovely climate.” The reporter hero interjected: “Of course, that’s your birthplace.” Madamo Alda replied; “I left New Zealand when an infant, so it is not a question of local pride. I like New Zealand, but I loathe Australia.”
