Final Day of Carnival Week

with Nincompoop on the outside. At the distance post Gold Brick was still in front, with Royal Saxon and Rascal next. Monaghan and Nincompoop moved up opposite the stand, but Gold Brick stayed on to lead Nincompoop by three-quarters of. a ; length, with Monaghan half a length off third. Rascal, Vcrtigern, and Black Duke were next. Investments, £7,296.

All started in the Pioneer Handicap, for which Silver Rule (Chief Ruler— Silver Lair, ridden by A. M'Cormack) was made a good favorite, with Chide, Concentrate, High Disdain, and the bracketed pair, thicker and Louise, next in demand. High Disdain and Silver Rule were the smartest to leave, and the former led to the straight proper. At the distance post Silver Rule challenged High Disdain, and beat him borne by a length. Goblin Market was two lengths off third, followed by Concentrate, Investments, £6,706-}-.

i’aperchase was scut out a good first favorite for tho Members’ Handicap, carrying more than Centrepiece, with Lausanne, \ Comic Song, Civility, Shirley, and Booster (Solferino—Pretty Eircc. ridden by A. E. Didlnuu) evenly backed. From an even start Paperchase. Booster, and Shirley wore the first to show out, and after going less limn a furlong Booster and Shirley ran past, and the latter led round the turn from Paper Boy, Centrepiece, and Civility. Tho three leaders held their place into the straight, and at the distance post the order of the leaders'was Shirley, Centrepiece, Civility, Booster, Lausanne (who met with interference when Paper Boy dropped back), and Comic Song. Opposite the lawn stand Booster drew out, and a few strides further oil Comic Song got an opening, and, travelling very fast, just failed to reach Booster by a neck. Civility was two lengtns away third, followed by Centrepiece, Shirley, and Joy Bird. Investments, £8,325. In the Seymour Handicap Wanderlust, Rotor, and Shalunar wore withdrawn, and Duke Abbey was sent out a hot favorite, carrying considerably more than Bronstoll, the second favorite. Quantum, Battle Colors, Fair Exchange, .and Kalos were the next best favored. Tho twenty horses were in perfect line when the barrier rose, and Groylinch and Quantum (next the rails) were first out, leading Spode, Amor, and Kindle round the far turn and across tho top. Creyfinch was done with at the home turn, and Quantum was well clear at tho distance post from Kindle. Opposite the lawn stand Quantum stopped very, suddenly, and Kindle (Lord Quex —Heat, ridden by E. Dunn) went on to win easily by two lengths from_ Kalos, with Jarretierre a similar distance away third, Bronstoll, Tcmbronoy, and Creyfinch next. Investments, £3,3301.

The Four acceptors in the G. G. Stead Gold Cup went to the post, and Limerick (ridden by A. E. Ellis') was sent out a hot favorite, with Martanna the best backed of the other three. Alar-, tanna and Footfall ran together three lengths in front of Grand Knight and the favorite until three furlongs from home. Then the favorite moved up, and was in charge at the distance post, whero_ Grand Knight also moved up. Opposite tho'lawn stand Ellis let Limerick’s head go, and he drew out to win comfortably by three lengths from Grand Knight, Footfall, and Martanna, the three finishing almost in line. The sectional times or the race wore:—One furlong, 15 l-ssec; two, 28soc; three, 40 2-osec; four, 52 l-sscc; six, Imin 15sec; full distance, 2min usee. Investments, £1,928.

The four _ acceptors for the Stonyhurst Handicap went to the post, and the betting was confined to Wild Pigeon and Rotor, .the former being slightly the better backed of the two, with Don Jose (Archery—Michaela, ridden by T. Metcalf) tiio better backed of the others. From a moving start Latin Quarter lost three or four lengths, and Don Jose Jed Rotor for two furlongs. Then Latin Quarter ran up, and was on Don Jose’s quarters rounding the top. Don Jose led Latin Quarter into tho straight, and at the distance post both Wild Pigeon and Rotor challenged. Don Jose finished full of running, and won by a length and admit from Wild Pigeon, with Rotor a bead off third. Investments, £4.454.

Civility was the only withdrawal from the Fendaltou Handicap, for which tho Gore-owned more Set Sail, with Emerson in the saddle, was sent out a much better favorite than Bonuance, with Yoma (Campfire—Martingale, ridden by T. Tito), Mandane, Taboo, and Battlement (who had been bought by Mr J. M. Samson just prior to the race) all well backed'. From a. good start Set Sail, Pink Note, and Lucy Lockett were the early leaders, the latter running to the front for a furlong. Then Pink Note took charge and led along the back from Taboo, Lucy Lockett, and Set Sail. Pink Note led round the top from Taboo, Battlement, and Set Sail, and at this stage Countersign was running tenth (on the rails). Turning into the straight the order of tho leaders was Pink Note, Taboo, Battlement, David Garrick, Set Sail, Bennaueo, and Yoma. At the distance post Yoma shot through, closely followed by Bcnuancc, and opposite the lawn stand Countersign put in a great run. but she was not able to sustain it, and a fine race resulted in Yorna staying on just long enough to beat Bonnancc, who was finishing the faster of the two, by a nose, with Countersign a length off third. Mandane was close up fourth, and Set Sail (who got a bad passage over the last furlong). Pink Note, aud Front Rank finished on even terms. Investments, £12,502.

THE RACING DESCRIBED

[By St. Clahi.] CHRISTCHURCH, November 12. The weather broke dull for the final day of the 1927 Cup carnival, and a heavy shower about 11 o’clock seriously interfered with the attendance at Riccarton. Fortunately for those who were present, the sky cleared after the first race, but, though fine, it was very cold for the remainder of the afternoon. Despite the fact that there were two small fields, the racing was interesting, but backers of favorites had a very bad time of it. The course whs in excellent condition, and the times were good. The totalisator investments, as compared with last year, were: —

ale * * * Beaumont and Joy Bird were withdrawn from the Suburban Handicap, for which Rowley (ridden by A. Hobson) was heavily backed, with the bracketed pair. Red Fuchsia and Grand National, Gold Mint, Projector, Cornstalk, and Thorndale (Antagonist— Bramblclytc, ridden by J. T. Humphries) next fancied and backed in that order. From a very prompt start Red Fuchsia and Happy Queen were the first to break the line, but after going a couplo of furlongs Cornstalk took charge and led from Wreath of Myrtle, Red Fuchsia, Grand National, and Thorndale. This was the order round the far turn and across the top. Thorndale ran to the front directly the straight was entered, and Rowley, who had been lying second last at the far turn, ran round his field into second place. Thorndale maintained his advantage to win by a good length from Rowley, who had to be ridden out over the last 50yds to beat Goosestep for-second money. Red Fuchsia, Green Cloth, and Grand National were next. Investments, £-1,552. * * * * In the Crcssy Handicap Solferite, Taboo, Sir Roy, and ■ Lausanne were withdrawn, and Beaumont, who was making his first start at the meeting, •was sent out a good_ favorite, carrying considerably more investments than Black Duke (who had an apprentice’s allowance), Receipt. Rascal, Vertigcrn, and Gold Brick (Solferino-Nada, ridden by L. J. Ellis), who wore fairly evenly backed. Arnent, who was standing sideways on when the barrier rose, Dismantle, and Kenraore got away badly at the start, from which Gold Brick led out from Receipt, Royal Saxon, and Rascal, Nincompoop being next. There was no change rounding the top, and Gold Brick (on the rails) turned into the straight just a little in. front of Royal Saxon And Rascal,
