LABOR DAY CELEBRATIONS
GATHERING AT EVAHSBALE BAD WEATHER PREVAILS The Otago Labor Day Association cole bra tod its thirty-eighth anniversary on Saturday, when its picnic and sports (postponed from Labor Day owing tc the boisterous weather) were held at Evansdale. The bad weather on Saturday did not begin until the second train of picnickers, who left at 1.30, were on their way to the grounds. Although the prospects in the morning were not too bright, the committee was favored with fine weather when the children’s events were carried on. When the rain fell at noon all the juvenile events were concluded, and those present,. consisting chiefly of mothers and their children, had to seek shelter wherever they could. Fortunately for those who did not obtain admission to the small hall, the ground was hedged on one side with a row of macrocarpa trees with long, spreading branches, and in this shelter most of tho picnickers had to content themselves.
When the 1.30 train arrived the rain was falling fairly heavy, and some of the new arrivals began, to look for a return train. About an hour later the rain ceased, and the Sports Committee was able to run off the races. After the baby show competition, which was held in the hall, a number of the holiday-makers brightened up the proceedings by indulging in dancing, and outside the Dunedin Pipe Band gave enjoyable items. A start was made on the sports programme early in the afternoon, and a good deal of credit was due to the starter (Mr F. Greeuhalgh) for the manner in which he despatched the various races. Tho superintendent was Mr R. J. Frame, and other members of the Sports Committee who deserve special mention were: —Clerk of course, Mr J. Martin; judges—Messrs Froggart, Ford, Mooney, Geddos, Brandon, Still, Ingram, Cocking, Maguire, Wilson, and Riugrose; handicappers, Messrs Williams and Spedding; Press stewards, Messrs W. Herbert and G. J. Froggart; children’s races, Mr Dakers (superintendent) and assistants.
Most of the races, attracted small entries, but 16 competitors faced the starter in the Labor Day Handicap, which was run off in two heats. The going was particularly heavy, not only on account of tho wet ground, but because of the long grass. The results of tho baby show and the sports events were as follow: BABY SHOW.
