SHOAL IN COOK STRAIT
WARNING TO MARINERS [Putt United Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON, November 10. To-day tho Government steamer Tutanekai located in Cook Strait an area of foul ground with at least one rock carrying only 30ft of water over it at low-water spring tides. This is a locality that must be avoided by deep draught vessels. Its area is given as 60ft south-west and north-east, and 40i’t cast and west. Tho shoal is close to tlio 178 fathoms mark shown on chart 695, Cook Strait. The tidal ripplo extends half a mile in a south-west to north-oast direction from tho shoal on both the ebb and flood streams. Both streams are from one hour and a-half to two hours later than tho Tory Channel entrance stream. A notice to mariners will bo issued by tlio Marino Department to-morrow. Tlio following bearings (correct magnetic) mark the portion of tlio shoal located:—North end of Mana Island, N., 78deg smin, E., Tcrawhiti extreme S. 20deg, E., rock off Wellington Head, S. 3odeg, W 7 Brothers Lighthouse S. 55deg, W., Koamaru Head, S, 64deg, W. Capo Jackson, N. 89deg W., angles north-west end Mana Island] Terawhiti extreme 83deg 24min, Terawhiti extreme rock, Wellington Head, 55deg Imin. Transit marks south end of Alotuara, touching Koamaru extremo Plimmerton village outclear of north end of Manna Island.
