TO GUIDE SHIPS The first of a series of radio beacons to be installed at various points around tho English coast to enable ships equipped ’with direction-finding apparatus to take then' bearings, has been brought into use in the Scilly .Islands. Tho call sign, “ OGG,” is repeated continuously in fair weather at t h o rate of fifteen words a minute for forty-seven seconds, followed by a dash of ton seconds and one repetition of the call sign, the whole operation taking exactly 60 seconds. The transmission is followed by three minutes’ silence and is repeated three times, covering a total period of nine minutes each half-hour. in foggy weather the signal consists of the one minute’s transmission and three minutes’ silence repeated continuously. The whole apparatus is automatic. The range of the “beacon” for accurate bearings to a ship using a normal Marconi direction-finder is approximately 70 to 100 miles.
