YOUTHFUL MARRIAGES

POSITION IN BRTIAIH ALTERATION IN LAW URGED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, LONDON, November 9. (Received November 10, at 10 a.m.) Women from many prominent organisations pleaded with the Home Secretary immediately to abolish the law whereby girls of 12 and boys of 14 can be legally married in England. Thej urged that Britain was lamentably behind other countries, and was a bad example to the world. They urged that no boy or girl under 16 should marry, and pointed out that already 30 under the age of 15 and 292 under 16 had been married in recent years. The Home Secretary declared that the question was a very difficult one, as in many cases of the marriage of girls under 16 there were urgent reasons. Any prohibition was likely to bo met with an outcry. Lady Astor described the Home Office circular in this connection as feeble and disappointing.
