EARLY SETTLERS
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly committee meeting of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon, the president (Mr AV. Nicholson) being in the chair. The following gifts wore received and votes of thanks passed to the donors:— From Miss AVheeler, Anderson ’a Bay, two volumes of illustrated ‘New Zealand Herald,’ 1881-1883, and a number of interesting photographs, books, etc.; Miss Hutchinson, St. Andrew street, volume ‘ Early Reformers,’ 1851, and a number of old coins; Miss Smith, Opoho, book of New Zealand views, and a number of interesting photographs; Miss Adam, Otokia, tinder box, flint, and striker, which belonged to her great grandmother, and was brought to New Zealand by her late father, AVilliam Adam, Otokia, Robert Henderson, 1858; J. AV. Murdoch, Oamaru, framed photo, of Ned Divine (coach driver), 1878; E. H. Tate, Dunedin, collection of old coins and paper money, also Samoan badge and model of Samoan catamaran.
The following early settlers were enrolled: —Mrs James M'Neil, nee M. Cross, 3 Brent street, Maori Hill, Peter Denny, 1865; J. AA r . Murdoch, Reed street, Oamaru, Chili, 1862; J. P. Lane, Carroll street, Crimen, 1863. Nine descendants were also enrolled. The following deaths were reported; —Mrs M. Smith, Ravensbournc (74), Gothenburg, 1863; Mrs D. Campbell, Gimmerburn, late AVaikouaiti (89), Strathallan, 1858; AV. Turnbull, Leith street (79), Gamecock, 1863; Mrs Thomas M'Kenzie, Mosgiel, late Kakanu! (87), 1866; Mrs John Beaton, Gore, arrived 1859; Mrs H. Allan, nee Kilgonr, New South AA’ales, late Dunedin (85), Sir E. Paget, 1856; Henry Howes, Mornington (81), arrived 1860; Mrs Robert Hay, Oamaru (85), Bombay, I 860; Mrs B. Brady, Milton (82), arrived 1804; Thomas S. Spain, Tela ■Valley (95), Ann Kimball, 1861; Daniel Ross, Menzics Ferry, late Maungatua (90), Ellen Simpson, 1862; Alex. Reekie, North-east. \ r alley (90), early ’sixties; Mrs Hargootl, Dunedin, early ’sixties; Charles Ross,' Dunedin (76).
