OTAGO CLUB MEETS The monthly meeting ol the Otago Motor ■ Club was bold in tho club rooms last night. Mr A. J. W. W ood, oiio of tho vice-presidents, presiding over a fair attendance of members. Mr Wood apologised for the absence of tho urcsidont, Mr A. 10. Ansell, who was visiting Christchurch and Wellington in. connection with the dub’s business.

The existence of danger to motorists in Short street, in tho vicinity of the city abattoirs, was commented upon in a letter from the Green Island Borough Council. The 'town Clerk staled that it had been suggested that tho club might agree to a warning light being erected in Short street. By this it was meant a Iramo which could bo placed over a street light, tho frame to be so constructed so as to warn motorists of danger. Tho council would bear tho cost of the actual erection of the light, as well as tho payment for current supplied. Such a sign was erected at tho intersection of Howe and King streets.

Tim Chairman reported that this matter had been considered by the executive, and loft in the hands of the Sign Post Committee, the proposal "being agreed to. The Secretary of _ the South Island Motor Sports Association (Mr B. H. Ayling) wrote stating that the Southland Motor Association had decided to go in for motor racing, and it was proposed that the Sports Association should go over to tho Motor Association and be a sports executive to organise and hold motor racing. As they wore, desirous of holding tho South Island championships in Invercargill about tho beginning of February, the association asked what financial assistance the chib would bo prepared to give in the way. of a guarantee to guard against any financial loss. It was intended to offer about £6OO in prize money, and some guarantee of this amount would bo required. They did not anticipate any loss, but it was necessary that funds should be assured before the meeting was gone on with. “What 1 would like to know,” said Mr W. Wright, “is, where is the £6OO coming from? Are they going to got it from the entries or admittance to the races?”

With reference lo the erection of warning devices at the public; level crossing at Stirling the district engineer of the Railways at Invercargill (Mr P. IT. Morey) wrote stating that this crossing was not considered to bo as dangerous as many others. A porter warned road traffic of the -approach of express trains, and ns goods trains almost invariably stopped at Stirling there should be very little danger if a sharp lookout was kept. Mr H. S. Reed said that even when the goods trains stopped at the station the engine was generally over the road, and the express engine stopped right on the crossing. The clerk of the Taieri County Council wrote advising that tho work of putting in a concrete ford at Lcishman’s = Ford, Silverstream, had been completed, the donation of tho club towards the cost of the work being £SO. The actual cost of the work was £290. Several motorists, said the chairman, had remarked that a great improvement had been effected through the construction of the ford.. The secretary of the North Otago Motor Association (Mr J. Malcolm) wrote stating that following up a resolution passed at the annual meeting of the association that the bridge alongside Bushey between Oaniaru and Palmerston was not an adequate structure for the traffic of a main road he had written to the Main Highways Board urging the need of a- new bridge. said that the executive had already communicated with the Highways Board on this subject.

the clerk of the Cromwell Borough Council (Mr A. 'Stephens) wrote, stating that tho council had set aside an area within the borough for camping sites for motorists. The area was well protected by trees, with water laid uii and conveniences, and was situated within a short distance from tho various recreation areas and ■ swimming baths.—Noted.

The secretary of the South Island Motor Union (Mr P. R, Hannan) advised that the next quarterly meeting of delegates would bo he'd at Tnvorcargiil on December 9.—Received. One hundred and forty-two new members were elected.
