TROTTING CUP

Kohara’s Well-Sustained Effort

Dominion Handicap to Elzear

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, like the C.J.C., opened its meeting with increased totalisator investments as compared with last year's figures.

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Meeting was opened in line weather, but heavy rain had fallen during the uightj and for the first three races, the third being the- Cup, the track resembled a very muddy stockyard. This accounted for the very slow time in the Cup. Almost immediately after the big event the track began to dry, and late in the day the going was fairly good. The crowd was very large. The totalisator handled £72,776, compared with £67,741.} last year. Concluding results;— N.Z. TROTTING CUP (Harness), 3.ooosovs. 2m. I—Mr J, L. Webb’s KOHARA, 24yds behind (A. Bryce) ... 1 3—Mr A. When the opening event, the Spring Handicap, was set down lor decision (lie track was very heavy, and Kanute, Bridget Galindo, and Little Logan were withdrawn, and Real the Great was sent out a few pounds’ bettor favorite than Cannonball, this pair being much better backed than Nelson M'Kinncy (Nelson Bingen—Rosie M'Kinncy, driven by R. Townley) and CTOmncl. All went away well, but Tiny Moon and Hcrbilwin broke early. Nelson M‘Kinney led throughout, and won casing up by a length from Cannonball, who beat Duke Bingen by a head for second money. Real the Great was half a length away fourth. Both Cannonball and” Real tiro Great were in good positions early in tbo second lap to challenge the winner, and Cannonball ran into second place nearly three furlongs from home, but could make no impression on the leader. Duke Bingen put in a skip tw r o furlongs from home; otherwise ho would have been second. Investments, £5,5711-. K * * » All started in the St. Albans Handicap, for which Jewel Pointer was at once installed a hot favorite. ian Yan, Final M'Kinncy, Firpo, Genera Bingen, and Author Jinks wore ail evenly backed. Albert Logan led Firpo, Pan Yan, and General Bingen over the first half-mile, Event breaking badly in the first quarter. Going along, tho back Bingen Lad and August Dillon moved up, and were together at the far turn, three lengths _ clear of the favorite. They were still together at the home turn, with Jewel Pointer tlu-.o lengths off. In the run home August Dillon drew out to win by two lengths from Jewel Pointer, who boat Bingen Lad by a length, final M Kinney and Pan Yan were next. Investments, £8,007 p K * * * Tbo starters and drivers in the Now Zealand Trotting Cup in their order of favoritism wore: Kohara (Cathedral Chimes —Bright Alice, A. Bryce), Acrou (J. Bryce, jnu.), Great Hope (J. Brvco), and Great Bingen (D. Withers) bracketed, Talaro (F. Holmes), Cardinal Logan (A. Hendrickson), Black Admiral (M B. Edwards), Audacious (0. E. Hooper) and Queen’s Own (E. C. M'Dermott) bracketed, Imprint. (L. F. Berkett), Logan Chief (J. J. Kennerloy) and Peter Bingen Holmes) bracketed, Escapade (A. Butterfield) and Sea Pearl (R. B. Berry) bracketed, Logamvood (L. I'l'ost), Man-o’-War (T. H. M'Girr), and Prince Pointer (11. E- Mills). . Nothing looked better than Kohara and Great Bingen in the parade, and Cardinal Logan also looked well, vvitn four in the bracket it was not suipitting to find the Brycc-AVithers combination made a good favorite, and the four were much better bac-reu than Talaro, who appeared to bo lame, unci be in turn was better backed than Cardinal Logan, who was third fancy. Black Admiral was almost «s well backed, and the total of £14,902 was £1,975 more than was invested on the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton last Saturday. ~ , , . Queen’s Own, Sea Pearl, and Acron lost their chances at tbo start. M hen the field had settled down Logan Chief was in front from Peter Bingen, Escapade, Audacious, Black Admiral, Jalaro. Man-o’-War, Kohara, Great Hope, and Cardinal Logan. With a mile completed Logan Chief and Kohara were racing at the bead of Peter Bingen, Mau-o’-War, Prince Pointer, Cardinal Loga.ii, Black Admiral, Logamvood, Great Hope, Audacious, Talaro, and Great Bingen. Going down tho back Ivohava took charge, and led into the straight, with Potci Bingen, Man-o’-War, Prince Pointer, and Cardinal Logan bandy, in the race home Kohara won by two lengths from Cardinal Logan, who finished- a similar distance in I rout or Man-o’-War. Great Bingen was fourth and Prince Pointer next. Investments, £11,902. a * * *

In the big field of 20 in the Empire Handicap the bracketed pair, Harvest Child and Bob Logan, was made a slightly belter favorite than Sahib, with Avenger, Bonalcna, and Omaha (coupled), and Genuine (Brent Loeanda —Succeed, driven by L. O. Thomas) all fairly evenly backed in a good pool. The bracketed pair, Bonalena and Omaha, oil the limit, at once drew away to tile front, and spreadeagled the field. Until three furlongs from homo they looked like running first and second, as_ they wore six lengths clear of Genuine, who was well clear from the others. The latter finished very well, and just caught Omaha in time to boat him by half a length, with Berenice three lengths away third. Royal Oak and Harvest Child were next. At the end of half a mile Nipper broke, and Granite _ City dashed into him. and the collision also interfered with Loeanda General, who was pulled up. Gtnndore, Avenger, Loeanda Child, and Acre lost their chances at the start, investments, £7,804). «* if: # * In the Uiccnrton Handicap the Ame-rican-bred mare Great Actress (Great Audubon —Nance O’Neill, driven by D. Withers) paralysed the betting, starting in a good field of fourteen. Henry Logan, .King Pointer, and Mato o’ Mine wore the only other starters well backed. Carbine Direct began the best, but broke after going three furlongs, and Rinscarth led Great Actress and King Pointer to the end of the first six furlongs. Then the favorite, who had been pulling very hard, went to the front, and two furlongs further on Amaris ran into second place. There was no change _ afterwards, the American mare winning very easily by three lengths from Amaris, who beat Henry Logan by a head. King Pointer and Mate o’ Aline and Binscarth next. Alvira fell entering the last lap, and gave her driver (F. E. Jones) a nasty shaking, and Pointalona was pulled up. Investments, £7,974. « * * * Alastcr Ando and Whispering Willie were withdrawn from the Dominion Handicap, the most valuable race for nnhoppled trotters in the dominion, leaving a fine field of eleven, with Mr G. J. Barton’s bracket. Young Blake and Elzear (Petereta —Lady Ellwood), better backed than Money Spider. Peter Swift and the coupled pair, John 'Mauritius and Judge Hancock, were the next best backed Elzear skipped at the start, and lost several lengths, Kola Boy leading Lee Todd and Bonny Spec along the back. At the end of half a mile Kola Boy, Le Todd, Bonny Spec, Judge Hancock, and Young Blake were the leaders, and racing along the back after going a mile Young Blake ran round the leaders and took charge from Kola Roy, who broke, and Elzear. Just before entering the last lap Young Blako broke half a mile from home, and Elzear went on from Peter Swift, who broke two furlongs from the post and stopped. .Money' Spider, looked dangerous at tins stage. Elzear led Judge Hancock into the straight, and just stayed on long enough to beat him by a head, .with

Trampfast, who covered, a lot of extra, ground, 'two lengths away fourth, and Young Blake and Peter Swift next. Investments, £9,756}. a * * * The Victoria Handicap puzzled backers well, and they had a difficulty in finding a favorite. Eventually Silk Thread was sent out a little better supported than Trimmer and Marshal Neil, who were slightly bettor backed than Dalmeny and William the Great tGroat Audubon—Annie Dillon, driven by H. Frost). Marshal Neil led Succession over the first half-mile, but entering the second lap the order was Marshal Neil, Dr Dillon, Succession, and William the Great. Going to the end of the first mile, Author Jinks ran up into second place, and entering the last circuit took charge and led William the Great into the back, where Jewel Pointer ran into third place. The Timarii-trained horse looked a certain winner at, the home turn, but inside the distance post he began to stop, and William the Great headed him and won by a length from Jewel Pointer, who just got up in time to beat Author Jinks by a short bead for second money. Tom Thumb and Trimmer were next, but well back. Investments, £9,122.1. * * * * By iiic withdrawal of St. Maura and Almriri from tho Hagley Handicap, a field of a dozen went to the post for the final event, which started just an hour behind the advertised time. Tho bracketed pair, Fight Ever and Native Chief (Logan Pointer—Regina D’Oru, driven by F. G. Holmes) was made a. very warm chance with Harold Thorpe, Jack Potts, and Bonny Logan next in demand. Bessie Logan led out from Bell Harold, Dillon Wilkes, and Talent. Entering the last lap there was no change, but going along the back Bell Harold took charge, and Native Chief began to move up on the outside of the field. Bell Harold led Harold Thorpe and Queen’s Own round the top, and the former, running wide at the entrance to tho straight, let Native Chief through, and in a fine finish bo won by a nock from Bell Harold, with Harold Thorpe a length and a-balf off third, and Queen’s Own next. Investments, £9,3371.

THE RACING DESCRIBED

A RECORD CROWD [By St. Clair.] CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. The weather broke dull after heavy rain overnight for the New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington, but soon after the first race had been decided the sun broke through, and for the remainder of the afternoon the weather was pleasant. The attendance was very large, and must have constituted a fresh record for this popular resort of the light harness sport. The rain made the track heavy for the opening events, but it gradually improved during the afternoon, and when the last race was run it was fairly good. The Cup provided a fine race, and the only unfortunate incident in the running occurred when with about six furlongs ,to go Sea Pearl broke and interfered with Great Bingen, who was just commencing his run, and lost fully half a dozen lengths. He finished fourth close up, and hut for this accident might have won. Cardinal Logan was kept too far back until four furlongs from home, and had a lot of ground as well as a big field to go round; other- 1 wise he might have reversed places with Kohara. The latter ran a great race, and has inherited both the speed and stamina of his site, Cathedral Chimes. He worried his way to the front before entering the last lap, and stayed on well. .

Speculation was heavy, and the £72,776 handled is an increase of £5,064J on the amount handled on Cup Day last yeat* , .
