LATE SHIPPING

ARRlVED.—November 9. TTolmdalc (8 a.m.). Williams, 661 tons, from Wanganui and Wellington. SAlLED.—November 9. West Nivaria (11.30 n.m.), G. Hagbcrg, 5,652 tons, (or Castlcclitf (Wanganui). THE STREAMLINE RUDDER, Tbo streamline rudder which is gradually being adopted by shipping is the result of experience in the handling of aeroplanes. The streamline is a variation of the old balanced ship rudder, only that in the latest Oertz type, the rudder itself works independently of the portion forward of the rudder part. That forward portion is a fixture. The Oertz rudder, instead of being .the usual single plate, is made of two plates, which bulge out at the rudder post and taper to the outside. A crosssection of the* latest streamline rudder shows the outline of a fish with the head a fixture and the body part movable. Less power is needed to operate the new rudder, which keeps the ship more steadily on its course, almost wholly eliminating the old difficulty of yawing. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
