HOW THEY RAH Star's ’ Radio Service.] Owing to the heavy rain overnight, the track at Addington was inclined to bo heavy for the opening day (Cup Day) of tho New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting. The overhead conditions were threatening, although the weather was warm. Rain later on in tho afternoon was probable, but tho attendance was very large. A STIRRING OPENING Katnte, Bridget Galindo,, and Little Logan wero tho scratchings in tho Spring Handicap, mi hoppled trotters, la tho held of, 10 Real the Great was favorite, with Cannonball and Nolson M'Kinney next in demand. The field went away well, Nourmahal being tho slowest to begin. Herbilwyn soon Trent to a break, and with only a furlong gone Nourmahal also broke. Nelson M'Kinney showed tho way to Lady Fan and Tiny Moon, with Nourmahal still breaking. On *ho back Wild Hebe, followed by Real the Gre/it. travelled fast, and Duke Bingen moved up behind them. Real the Great soon headed Wild llobc, and Tiny Moon went to a break, and Real the Great also became temporarily , unsettled. Turning out of the back. Nelson M‘Kinney was_sti.il in front from Lady Fan. Here Tiny Moon broke and was pulled up, and at the mile post Duke Bingen also went up in the air. Ileal tho Great moved up into third place, three lengths behind Nelson M'Kinney and Lady Fan. There was no change in the order into the straight, saving that Cannonball was quickly reducing the lead and ran into fourth place. With sis furlongs to go the positions wero Nelson M'Kinnon, Lady Fan, with Real the Great, Duke Bingen, and Cannonball together. Tiny Moon and Nourmahal were out of the race. Another furlong gone, Real the Great went past Lady Fan. The field was giving a splendid exhibition of trotting. Out back Cannonball was travelling fastest, and with half a mile to go he was alongside Real tho Great and Lady Fan. Nelson M‘Kinney, however, still held his lead. Entering the straight Cannonball made another forward move, bqt his effort on the back stretch had its effect, Nelson M'Kinney stalling off the challenge. It was a great linisii. with Nelson M'Kinney and Cannonball fighting it out, and Duke Bingen coming up fast. Nelson M'Kinney lasted long enough to beat Cannonball by a neck; Duko Bingen third a head away, and Real the Great length back in fourth position. The winner went loscc slower than handicapped. FAVORITE JUST FAILS Tho fourteen acceptors in tlie St. Albans Handicap went to the post. Jewel Pointer was made favorite, with General Bingen, Firpo, and Final M'Kinney next in demand. Firpo stood at the post, and Bingen Lad led out. Pan Yan and August Dillon left tho mark quickly, and General Bingen left slowly. _ The order passing the stand was Bingen Lad, Daisy Pointer, Albert Logan, August Dillon, Final M'Kinney and Pan Yan, and then General Bingen, with Jewel Pointer coming fast on his outside. Jewel Pointer flew past General Bingen, Pan Yan, and raced alongside Final M'Kinney. On the bend Bingen Lad was stilt in front from August Dillon, which was travelling fast, followed by Daisy Pointer and Jewel Pointer. The latter

was shaking off the bunch. With over half tho distance covered August Dillon raced up to Bingen Lad, and Jewel Pointer took third running. Tho two leaders, though, were holding their positions well. The order into the straight was August Dillon and Bingen Lad, Jewel Pointer, and Final M'Kinney. In a fine run home August Dillon shook off Bingen Lad, and Jewel Pointer beat the latter in the last two strides for second place. Final M'Kinnew was fourth. Time, 2miu 15 2-osee. Tho winner was handicapped to do 2.13, and tho time in tho mud was very creditable. The time also showed that the track was drying up.

KOiIARA'S CUP VVIH Locanda Mac was the only course scratching for the New Zealand Trotting Cup—the richest stake iu New Zealand. The starters and their drivers were:—Audacious (0. E. Hooper) sci r , Escapade A. Butterfield) scr, Logan Chief (J. J. Keiincrley) 12yds, Cardinal Logan (A. Ihmlnvhson) 12yds, Peter Bingen (F. G. Holmes)) 12yds, Talaro (F. Holmes 12yds, Sea Pearl (B. Berry) 2Jyds, Black Admiral (M. II Edwards) 24yds, Kohara (A. Bryce) 24yds, Queen’s Own (E. C. M'Dermott) 24yds, Acron (J. Bryce, jun.) 24yds, Loganwood (L. Frost) 36yds, Man-o’-Wra (T. H. M'Girr) 36yds, Great Hope (J. Bryce) 36yds, Imprint (L. F. Birkett) 48yds, Prince Pointer (R. E. Mills) 60yds, Great Bingen (D. Withers) 84yds. A great crowd arrived at the course to see tho race. Every horse in tho field was beautifully conditioned. The Bryce bracket—Kohara, Acron, Great Hope, Great Bingen—was elected favorite. Talaro was second choice, Black Admiral third, and Cardinal Logan fourth in tho order of favoritism. Audacious —Queen’s Own and Logan Chief—Peter Bingen wero the others bracketed on the machine. Audacious was the first of tho frontmarkers to leave tho mark, and Great Bingen started at a terrific speed. Acrou broke up, and did not leave the mark, and Queen’s Own soon went to a break. Escapade went to tho front from Audacious, and Logan Chief ran to the front. Peter Bingen joined Logan Chief, and then came Escapade, Audacious, Talaro, Kohara. The leading order was unchanged as they raced past the stand; after Escapade came Black Admiral, CaTdinal Logan (on the rails), Loganwood, Man o’ War, Kohara, Great Hope, Prince Pointer, Sea Pearl, Imprint, and Great Bingen. Turning out of the straight, Logan Chief was still in front of his stablemate, Peter Bingen, who was followed by Escapade and Audacious. As tho field turned into the hack stretch, Black Admiral, and Talaro were travelling fast. Kohara improved his position considerably and raced up beside Peter Bingen and Logan Chief. Neither Imprint nor Great Bingen seemed to ho making any impression. Down the back tho order was soon changed—Logan Chief, Kohara, Man-o’-waj, Peter Bingen, Escapade, Black Admiral, and Talaro. Audacious was dropping back all the time. Great Hope was travelling nicely on tho outer. Tho field were then well bunched. Imprint was putting in a wonderful run, while Talaro was dropping back. With six furlongs to go Logan Chief was out in front, with Kohara as his closest attendant. As they raced out of the straight Talaro broke and collided with Sea Pearl, who had to bo pulled up, and Great Bingen was forced to move right across the outside rails, thus losing much valuable ground. Three furlongs from homo Kohara hit tho front from Logan Chief, Peter Bingen, and Man-o’-war. Hero Prince Pointer made an early run, travelling the fastest of the back-markers. Cardinal Logan was also going well. At the bend Kohara was showing the way to Man o’ War and Prince Pointer, Logan Chief and Peter Bingen having dropped back. Great Bingen was flying along, but ho appeared to be too far back. In line for the judge, Kohara was leading from Man o’ War and Prince Pointer, while Cardinal Logan was coming fast. Kohara, however, had enough in reserve to beat tho fast finishing Cardinal Logan in a great finish, Man o’ War being third, and Great Bingen fourth. Time, 4min 46 3-ssec. Cardinal Logan made a wonderful run over the last half-mile, while Prince Pointer, who was with Kohara at the home turn, faded out in the final run. Great Bingen’s close fourth was an indication that the finish would have been exciting if be had not been interfered with by Talaro. The Cup was run 31) minutes late. The investments on tho machine for tho Cup were approximately £15,000.
