AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EVENING FIXTURES, COMMENCED OTAGO CENTRE'S MEET Large sized fields were the order in practically -every event at the first evening athletic meet of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at the Caledonian Ground last night, there being a small sprinkling of spectators, ■The weather was bitterly cold, and a wind from the bay was encountered by sprint competitors. The best performance of the evening was registered in the 880yds relay handicap, which was won by a strong University team from scratch in the fast time of Imin 32sec. This team, comprising H. D. Morgan, R. F, Barr, 0. H. Duff, and 0. E. M'Veigh, is a solid proposition, and over such a distance will take a lot of boating. H. J. Pollock, the Anglican distance runner, showed his versatility by carying off a fast quarter from the 25yds mark in 53 3-ssee, and _ being second to Arthur Holt (Byds) in the 120yds handicap, in which Pollock had 9yds. H. D. Morgan (IJyds) was third. The mile fell to the Civil Service runner, B. R. M'Kernan (140yds), who beat J. J. Morris (55yds) in a fine finish, the time being slow (imin 42sec). The ladies’ handicap was a gift for Miss J. Walsh. Mr A. Burk acted as starter, and the, judges were Messrs A. Melville and G. H. Lusk, the latter being a member of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, who is at present visiting Dunedin. Mr E. L. Macassey was superintendent. Next Thursday the Civil Service Club will .stage an evening meet at the Cale., commencing at 6.30 o’clock. Results:— 120 YARDS HANDICAP. Firbt Heat.—H. D. Morgan (IJyds) I, C. E.
