SPORTING

CANTERBURY'TURF NOTC3 [Special to tjik ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHUKCJi, October 27. At Kiccarton to-day Footfall and Kapler attracted some attention when they made their way to the top of the straight for a gallop over a mile and three-quarters;' but any hopes that were entertained of a good try out were soon dispersed. They ran the-first halfmile at an easy pace, and timed from’ the mile and quarter mark, the first recognised disc, they took 30 2-ssec to go to the milo post. The next half-mile took 53sec, and they completed the last mile and a-quarter in 2miji 19 3-osec, the last half-mile occupying 56 l-ssec._ It w’as a disappointing gallop if serious business was intended, for both horses were going aldng veiy comfortably all through, and even over the last bit they were not doing their best. Count Cavour broke away at the milo and quarter post at a moderate pace, taking 28 2-ssec to run the first two fuiflongs. Then his speed improved, and on reaching the six-furlongs mark, bavin g_ gone half a milo, in 54 2-sscc, he was joined by Amor. Tim Cup horse was at the half-mile post in Imin 20 l-ssec, and then ho commenced to draw’ away from his mate, and ho finished several lengths in front. _ The time for the full journey was 2min 14sec. The last mile occupied Imin 45 2-sscc, and the last half-mile 55 4-ssec. It was cjuite a pleasing effort, and it looked as if it could have been a little better. T. Green is to rido K. J. Mason’s horses at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. This means that lie will be on Eulalie in the Stewards’ Handicap. A. E, Ellis will rido Crown Area in the Stewards’ Handicap. P. Davis will bring his team south on Friday night. They will be Gascony, Doree, Great Charter, and Pure Gold. So far no rider has been engaged for Gascony in the Stewards’ _ Handicap, but it Would hot bo surprising to find J. Barry in the saddle. J. H. Jefferd has arrived with Star Stranger and Joy King, whoso Trentham form suggests they will race well ftt Kiccarton.
