At llie montlily meeting of the Northeast Valley branch of tho W.C.T.U. Sirs Peart presided. The delegates’ reports of the annual district convention were read and much appreciated. Votes of sympathy were passed with Mrs Roberts in the death of her mother and Mrs Bedford in tho death of her father. Arrangements were made tor the “ Bring and Buy ” sale, which is to bo held shortly. Thanks are duo to Mrs Sanders for a successful impromptu sale of (lowers and useful articles which was held at the close of the meeting. A meeting of the City Ratepayers’ Association was hold in the T .iVI.O.A. committee room on Monday evening. Mr Ansell occupied tho chair. A letter was received from the Minister of Education (Mr R. A. Wright) explaining that the association’s suggestion With regard to tho dangers of children playing on main roads was receiving his careful consideration, also the advisability of incorporating in school literature some form of instruction along these lines. It was decided that the association should hold a public meeting at an early date to discuss various matters of public interest. The following inquiries were asked by a ratepayer;—What was going to be done with that portion of the Town Belt at the foot of Preston crescent and liarcourt street, where the soil was now being removed and where a drain had recently been put in, but was now partly washed away? Waipori: is it correct that a quantity ol cement purchased and carted out to Waipori is now completely spoiled? Hospital Board: Regarding the proposed laundry to be built at Cavcrsluun it was pointed out by a ratepayer that should, tho Hospital Board proceed with this undertaking it would be an everlasting and ever-increasing expense to the ratepayers, and it would be far better to obtain land adjoining tho hospital for the purpose. The committee will investigate these questions. j-iio half-yearly summoned meeting of Court Enterprise, A.U.E., was held ia the court room, Stuart street. The C. chair was occupied by C.R. ifro. D. Auld. invitations wore accepted from Courts Littlejohn and King Edward’s Pride. Two proposals for membership were received for tho ensuing meeting. The “ Eallcn Soldiers’ Toast ” was given by the C.R., members standing iu silence. The election and installation of officers was conducted by P.C.R.s Bro. It. J. Frame and T. Monk, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Tho election resulted: — C.R., Bro. J. D. Perry; S.C.R., Bro. J. E. Marshall; treasurer, Bro. W. A Young; secretary, Bro. J. Gillies; S.W., Bro. T. The Anniversary Committee reported on the arrangements made in respect of the sixty-fourth celebration. P.C.R. Bro. U. J. Frame, on behalf of Court Pride of Dunedin, responded to the toast of “ Our Visitors.”

Ensor, both of whom congratulated the recipients on tho satisfactory way in which they bad tilled those offices. It was decided to nomitntle G.C.R. Bro. Reynolds for the position of district beadle. Tbo North-east Valley Progress League held its monthly meeting on Monday night. A committee was set tip to go into tho matter regarding Watt’s road and report to the next meeting of the executive. ft was reported that work was to bo undertaken at Allen street, so as to stop encroachments by tho waters of the creek. A deputation was appointed to wait upon the mayor regarding other portions of tho creek which were considered dangerous. It was decided to wait upon the superintendent of tho Telegraph Department with a request for a slot telephone in Mechanic street. The league congratulated Mr T. K. Sidcy, M.P., on the passing of the Summer Tunc Bill. At tho monthly meeting of tho Otago United Temperance Reform Council it was resolved that—“ The council enters its strongest protest that the delegates of Great Britain should be found opposing tho movement initiated by European States for the appointment of a committee from the League of Nations to inquire into ‘ Alcoholism and Its Results.’ Wo express onr deepest regret that representatives of our own nation should in any way seek to safeguard and perpetuate tho evils consequent upon alcoholism in the nations, recognising that alcoholism is a more devastating evil, a more injurious menace and hurt to tho happiness, health, and progress of humanity than all the evils of war, pestilence, and famine combined. The council desires the executive of tho Now Zealand Alliance to forward to the League of Nations and to the delegates of Britain and Australia tho most emphatic protest that is possible.” A fmo of £4O was inflicted on James Henry Doleman, tobacconist, of Erankton, by Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., at Hamilton on a charge of conducting his premises as a common gaming house. The evidence revealed hookmaking and the publication of a double chart. A total of 140 lots, tho usual heterogenous samples, was offered at the Railway Department’s salo of unclaimed lug'gage, directed yesterday by Messrs T." Paterson and Co.
