This is the first time that a mayor holding office has done so. He is surrounded at his hotel liy a magic; circle of senators and secretaries, and sits enchained amidst all the pomp and majesty that usually accompanies toreign monarchs. llis suite of rooms is guarded faithfully as any palace by its courtiers and soldiers. An equerry on duty outside the bedroom in which the mayor spent three-quarters of the day, shouted in response to every telephone ring: “Say, mister, the mayor’s in his bath. He is having a wash, and can’t see you.” When lie left his hotel Mr Walker was solemnly escorted by a long line of functionaries.
