BLACKMAILER POSTMAN
JUDGE'S EETOIIT TO COUNSEL. At the Kent Assizes recently Albert James Payne (21), a Maidstone postman, was sentenced to eight months’ hard labor for demanding money by menace from Mrs Vallanoe, wife of Mr Aylmer Ynilance, the archteolngisi. The prisoner wrote offering to hand over a letter containing an alleged secret in the lady’s life, but Mr Berryman, for the defence, explained there was not the slightest foundation .for the suggestion.- Thu prisoner, he added, would probably lose his appointment) Mr Justice EowlnU; I hope so. There are plenty of honest men who want work without the Post Office employing blackmailers. Passing sentence, he said bo had no compunction or compassion for the blackmailer, and the thanks of the community were due to Mrs Vallance for going straight to the police.
