THAT NEW DREDGE
HARBOR BOARD'S PROPOSALS SUPERINTENDING ENGINEER TO GO ABROAD THE £350,000 SCHEME. For an hour and a-half last night the Harbor Board discussed in committee the report of a sub-committee which made recommendations in respect to the calling of tenders and other matters in connection with the proposed new dredge, the purchase of which is part of the £350 000 scheme propounded two years ago for the purpose of improving the harbor. There were present Messrs H. ii* Holier (in the chair), W. Wilkinson, J. Loudon, J. E. Munro, C. H, Hayward, D. F. H. Sharpe, T. Anderson, H. C. Campbell, W. Gow, A. Cable, Captain Coll M‘Donald, and H. M. Driver. The Chairman: I do not know whether you wish that this business should be taken in open board or in committee. If taken in open board, it will bo finished quickly, os you will only be able to speak once, but I think you should go into committee, as tjiero are things for which explanation is necessary. Mr Gow moved that the board go into committee. Mr Campbell seconded the motion. “What is there to hide?” asked Mr Anderson. Mr Mollcr: There is nothing to hide. Mr Anderson read a previous resolution of the board that all future matters concerning the dredge bo taken in open meeting. “ Now is your opportunity,” ho said. The motion was carried on the voices, Messrs Anderson and Cable voting against it. In committee the board came to decisions in respect to tiie letter of invitation to tender, the proposed tender, the proposed contract agreement, and the null and machinery specifications. The question of whether the dredge is to be brought out to Port Chalmers under contract or hy the board itself caused some difference of opinion, it being finally decided that tenders be called for delivery at the port of construction. and alternative tenders for the dredge to bo delivered in working order in Otago Harbor. It was decided to call for tenders m Groat Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and the Continent. It was decided to ask that the period of guarantee by the builders be twelve months, whether tho dredge be delivered at the port of construction or in Otago Harbor. Tho Standing Committee recommended: “A representative of the board, with Mr Robertson, superintending engineer, proceed opportunely to Britain to arrange and complete details regarding dredge tenders, etc.”— This matter raised some discussion, and it was decided that Mr Robertson should proceed Home, but that a representative of the hoard should not go in the meantime. It was decided that one of Mr Robertson’s first duties on arrival -a London should be to ascertain all particulars in regard to how the dredge was to bo brought nut, and to advise the board fullv on tho matter. Messrs Wilkinson, Gow, Munro, Campbell, and Holler were appointed a committee to handle matters generally in regard to the dredge, and to have authority it* adjust urgent matters. WORK AT 1 THE MOLE.
Tho board decided to accept the offer of the Union Steam Ship Company to sell tho steamer Aloana Tor £BSO, and to sink tho hulk at tho Mole.
