The death is announced of Mr Richard L. Scott, a well-known Christchurch builder and contractor, ot tho firm of 1). Scott and Son. _ Of the many contracts which this firm has carried out, perhaps the most important have been the Dominion Buildings in Cathedral square, Dalgcty and Co., Ltd., and the War Memorial Bridge of Remembrance. The late Mr Scott became a very prominent member of tho Builders’ Association of Christchurch, fulfilling his term as president, and very materially helping in establishing the satislactory coiuHjJms under which the building trade is conducted to-day. He also assisted m tho federation of building associations throughout the dominion. Apart from tho conduct of his own succcsslul business, Mr Scott found time to play a leading part in a number of important industrial concerns. _ Ho was a man of marked business ability, and was chairman of the Marlborough limber Company from its inception, when the mills were first erected at Nydia Bay, Pelorous Sounds, and ho was also chairman of the Forest Saw-milling Co., with mills on tho West Coast, as well ns being chairman of both the Opouri and Orepuki Shipping Companies.—Christchurch correspondent. New visitors to tho Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs G. B. Ward (Loudon), Messrs G. Kcrruish, W. H. Anderson, and Beaumont Smith (Wellington), Mrs J. W. Smith, Miss G. Cameron, and Mrs T. H. Scanned (Invercargill). Among tho guests at tiic Excelsior Hotel are Mr E. B. Bateman (Sydney), Mr O. L. Glcdhiil (Christchurch), Mr J. Henderson (Ashburton), Mr K. O. Hay (Balcliitha), and the members of the" Taranaki Rugby football team. A Sydney cable slates that a wireless message Irom \ ila announces the death of Mr C. P>. Smith-Bowse, tho British Resident Commissioner of the New Hebrides. • Mr V. M. .Dickinson left by the expross to-day on a visit to the North Island.
